I wish there were more tele-health care options. For example, if a blood test is needed could that be done with a home kit, instruction video and ice pack mailer?Could a smart blood pressure cuffs, smart watches, home blood sugar testing devices be better integrated to video health calls?Lastly, could we do this for pets? Pica (my cat) is elderly and very stressed by travel (she has hurt herself in the past due to panic) So, I'd only take her in when VERY sick. But she could use a check up.

I was able to do a dermatologist appointment via video call and that was great. But then he wanted tests so now I might have to go in. (and it will be months before I can)It feels like there is progress to be made in this area that hasn't been made.

@neckspike I guess I should read up on ways to help her stay calm. Maybe I can practice with her just taking her down to the lobby a few times in the elevator to see if we can work up to going to the vet.

@futurebird Wouldn't this be a business opportunity? 🙂

@benh That sucks. Just because she did a bad job doesn't mean there isn't anything of value there!

@jajo I hope not. I feel like those who tried to make this a business have given the whole idea a bad reputation.

@benh In a sense that is a kind of valuable service.

@futurebird In Sweden where Iive a lot of companies has started to make health care available online. I have to check how they are handling the tests of their patients.

@futurebird Not sure about the vet question, but I could see a future where local testing facilities (there is one near my house) could be a regular adjunct to tell-health. Drop in for a throat culture or blood draw and then see the doctor by video when the results are in.

@futurebird @neckspike That's probably the best approach: normalize getting in the travel cage and going places. Going to the vet is just that one unfortunate time that wasn't fun.

@futurebird Techs can travel. If I can get my car windshield replaced or my will notarized at home or work, why can't I get my blood drawn?

@futurebird @neckspike A vet friend of mine recommended doing things like that with our cat when we first got her, both trips that don’t end in vet visits and also making her cat carrier a safe place she can choose to go in most of the time.

@futurebird The other option ought to be house calls. Bring the vet to the animal.

@walnuthulls There are vets that make house calls in NYC but they only go to fancy neighborhoods and balked at coming to the Bronx. Which made me all insulted and huffy.

@futurebird My daughter is a vet in a rural area, thinking of opening a mobile practice someday. But she's very social - I'll suggest she talk to city friends about the idea. Sounds like a real opportunity. One problem is a lot of vet practices have been bought by finance companies that are really changing their business model from service to profit.

@futurebird We used to have a vet that would do house calls, mostly because our tiny, elderly Killer would freak out at the office: frothing at the mouth, scratching and clawing - it scared all the other humans and pets. Even then we had to give her a sedative, too. But bonus: she gave us the "litter rate" for the other three cats so it worked out the same cost-wise. (And we didn't have to wrangle 4 cats!)

@futurebird in London, the way sti testing works is they mail you a kit of swaps (and lancets and vials for blood), you do your swabs and draw your own blood, and you drop the whole kit in the mail. you don’t even need ice packs! but I think a lot of people don’t actually manage to do the blood draw, and that’s just a small vial you get from a finger, not the quantities you get from an elbow blood draw

@futurebird I have had at-home ambulatory cardiac monitoring: I get mailed a patch sensor which records for two weeks, then I mail it back.I do not need anything smarter than that since I do not care for information about my every heartbeat to be passing through the network at any point without a very good reason.For heart patients at higher risk; there are versions that pair with smartphones and issue alerts for arrhythmias.
