I am bombarded from many different venues of notifications of the Ars Magica and Trail of Cthulhu Kickstarters. The latter might have been interesting if it weren't for the fact that I never felt the 1st ed. lacked much, and I haven't played it much. Ars Magic is more complicated.1/2#Kickstarters #ArsMagica #TrailOfCthulhu

I read a summary, somewhat facetious, of a typical Ars Magica first adventure like this:..."players spend all time creating characters, their sanctum, their familiar, their shared library, magical and mundane defences, their list of spells and magical items, what they are studying right now, what they will study next, their teacher, their servants, their neighbours, ... , nearby magical creatures, ruins and potential sources of magical ingredients -- but never get to the first adventure "2/2

@AndreasDavour In fairness, that is very much the best part of the early part of the game. World building, character building, structuring what it is that you're going to spend your time with. Actually establishing the things that you care about. And this is an important fact about Ars Magica as a game design — It's not about going adventuring. It's not about going on an adventure. There is no first adventure. You're an established magus who is literally a member of the most powerful organization in Mythic Europe. You are darn close to effectively immortal. You have comprehension literally beyond that of mortal men and dabble in the affairs of great and small. If you decide to take a decade off and really work on a project, that's not a problem. In fact, you might resent the intrusion of an adventure. You have plans, you have a group of peers who are equally accomplished as you are. You need to know what you know and what they want to know. The first adventure is the next great thing that you learn and publish.(cont)#TTRPG #ArsMagica

@AndreasDavour That's literally the cool thing about Ars Magica. The thing that's not so cool about it is the fact that it went from a relatively slim tome that allowed you to elaborate on things pretty effectively with second edition to the bloated wallowing creature of perhaps a thousand too many pages of fifth. But that's okay because there's a really nice add-on for #Ironsworn that effectively gives you Ars Magica magic: #Arcanum . And it's much more narratively focused, structured rules. At this point, I wouldn't play AM any other way.https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/368750/arcanum-high-magic-for-ironsworn#TTRPG #ArsMagica

@lextenebris Well I loved those things, as they turned a lot of expectations of what a rpg should be around. I got myself a copy of the game because of that. I still respect it a lot, and tell people about it, and how they need to know about it to understand how our hobby has evolved.Sadly, for me those qualities always felt mostly like real life in academia. I am happy others have had fun with it. Then you are doing it right.

@lextenebris I'm not sure I believe that kind of magic system really belongs in another game, but it's kinda heartwarming to see it attempted for Ironsworn. The 4th ed Talislanta game also had a free form magic system, and it did turn out it didn't work that well. It was intended mostly as a tool for the GM, but it still felt out of place. Now, all this didn't stop me from once building a system like that, strongly influenced you might say, for Drakar & Demoner/Dragonbane. Never tried it out.
