@graf i dont know the distances involved but surely the distance between saturn and its rings is greater than the distance between the Earth an the moon? ergo we should be inside the rings and Saturn should just about fill the damn sky...

@rlier23 @Bunsen @graf Surprisingly, Saturn only weighs about 7000 times as much as the moon. I imagine the waves would actually not be that much bigger, although I don't know all of the math to figure that out. Thank you friend.

@graf the Roche limit for a rigid satellite around Saturn is way, way higher than the distance between the Earth and Moon. i don't think that view would last very long.

@s2208 @kybermace @graf I was curious and looked it up. Rings start at 4,300 miles away from Saturn and go out to 50,000. The moon is (average) 239,000 miles away from earth 😔

@gav @KnifeEar @branman65 @graf I don't know what the Roche limit would be around Saturn but the Earth is far denser than any of the moons of Saturn, so I wouldn't be worried about that. The main problem here is that Earth would be tidally locked.

@branman65 @gav @KnifeEar @graf The diagram on the left shows an object the at is tidally locked to its parent object (Moon to Earth) where its rotation is synchronized to its orbit around said object. The right shows a scenario of where this no rotation at all. At the distance of the Moon to the Earth, there is no way that the Earth wouldn't be tidally locked to Saturn. If the Earth was hypothetically captured by Saturn somehow at enough distance there's a possibility for some kind of regular day-night to exist with a non-tidally locked rotation.

@graf This would be cool for a few milliseconds seconds at most. Tidal forces and gravity would make the Earth a disaster within minutes. Tsunamis and earthquakes. The shape of the Earth would be distorted. The Earth's atmosphere would be pulled toward Saturn, stripping it away. Within hours or days at the most, Earth's orbit would be destabilized, launching the planet into space or toward the Sun.

@dictatordave @graf @grey Earth would be totally devastated, stripped of its atmosphere, and flung toward space or the Sun (the initial position of Saturn when the switch happens in the key factor) within hours, so no worries about the radiation.
