Youtube kicked up another 1964 Beatles concert tonight. More amazing footage with better audio than the last one.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNQutZEKFHE@Professor_Stevens #Music

@fmhilton @Professor_Stevens I was born 2 years later but often wish I could have witnessed all of that. Now pop music sucks and there really isn't a music business like there once was.And I work in the music business when things are going well. I wish I could do it full time.

@Ricardus @fmhilton Ricardus, when the music business was like it once was, what was best about it?

@Professor_Stevens Now that I think about it, it's a difficult question to answer. It's hard to separate my memories and feelings from it. But Rick Beato talks about some of it in his videos.Songs tended to be more interesting and more complex back then. The dumbing down of our culture has happened in so many areas. This video is a fun video talking about a bit of what I mean:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnRxTW8GxT8

@Ricardus Well, that is an interesting take. He depends on me being able to appreciate why the transitions he finds so breathtaking are so breathtaking, though. As a person with little knowledge of music theory, I can only tell that they are breathtaking because he says they are. I do like his mathematical analysis, but I wish it were more accessible. That said, I agree that music is dumb today. I miss prog rock and the "concept" album.

@Ricardus OTOH, I just re-listened to "Baba O'Riley," one of the greatest rock songs. It always seemed absurd to me. Three stone-crusher chords, over and over, and lyrics that have the unlikely dual qualities from that era of being: 1) Perfectly comprehensible as words; and 2) Utterly nonsensical as a message.I mean, what fields? Who is Sally? Why is it a "wasteland?" And I always hear Daltrey sing "fight for my meals," not "farm."You know this stuff. Does it make sense I'm not getting?

@Professor_Stevens I always heard fought not fight in baba O'Riley. Regarding that Rick piatto video, I don't think it's important that you necessarily understand the music theory to get the overall point, which is that record labels were not afraid to sign artists who wrote complex music back then. I think that song has 24 key changes, which is insane. If a song is going to have a key change usually there's one or two. I mean in popular music anyway. 1/2

@Professor_Stevens and as Rick pointed out, that song made it really high up on the charts. I don't actually think it was a number one but it was certainly top 10 or top five.

@Professor_Stevens and regarding the lyrics to baba O'Riley, most of my record collection is instrumental. My brain seems to want to listen to the musical arrangements first. I don't actually get the lyrics till after many dozens of listenings. I don't think I know the lyrics to baba O'Riley even though the song is 50 years old and I've heard it a million times.

@Ricardus It was #4 on Hot 100 and actually did make #1 on Adult Contemporary (says Wikipedia). Worth mentioning that Mendes does a great cover, but it was written by two other people.I do love mathematical takes on music, particularly chord progressions. My game programming students grok those, because they can be realized as computer language data structures. The Wikipedia page on it actually mentions that Rick Beato video:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Never_Gonna_Let_You_Go_(Barry_Mann_and_Cynthia_Weil_song)
