@Shadowman311 "It didn't lift 100 people directly to Mars perfectly, so obviously the whole project is a massive failure and a gigantic waste of time."Yes, Musk is taking a big gamble with this. Yes, it may ultimately prove unworkable. But how can he say there isn't a need for it? If they can get this beast to work any where near advertised, it will create new markets. Being able to loft that much tonnage into orbit for that price point makes micro-gravity manufacturing economically feasible; break through materials, breakthrough pharmaceuticals, maybe 3D printed organs. It makes makes space based solar feasible, which means endless, relatively cheap, carbon neutral energy. It means H3 and other resource extraction on the moon. It means the colonization and development of the rest of the solar system becomes feasible. Some people become scientists because they have big dreams. It looks like some other miserable bastards become scientists so they can shit on people while feeling important.

@Charles_in_Charge @Shadowman311 All that - yes - but I'm thinking the FAA backed-off, and let this happen now (they wanted to delay until late November / after the election), because the MIC has big plans for this thing + The Jews are backing Trump this time, to get "patriots" on-board with a war on Iran. That said, as an achievement of engineering, it was amazing to see something that huge successfully precision-guided from supersonic-freefall to the tower arms.

@ChristiJunior @Shadowman311 He's/was one of those modern 'acamdeic' parasites with nothing useful to actually contribute to humanity but to suck on the sweet teat of grant money. I remember seeing lots of those types getting butt-tilted over Brexit. Urban libs despite their virtue signalling are some of the most selfish, detached wastes of human DNA that were ever drunkenly conceived by their "functional" alcoholic mothers.

I'm not connecting the dots on how putting more poisons (see pharma) in your bodies is the 'next step' or that this precision booster landing leads to 'micro-gravity manufacturing'. I also do not claim to be in that space so I'm open to enlightenment.

@VikingWays @Shadowman311 Getting the cost of getting into orbit down below a certain point is the important thing. Precision landing is just a step to achieving that.Think of it this way. Before SpaceX and their Falcon rocket, getting into orbit was like taking a covered wagon across the continent to the West Coast. If they can get this new rocket to work as they say, it will be like taking a regular modern train from Chicago to San Francisco. Much more cargo, much cheaper, much larger volume of traffic, and probably much more safely.Under the previous technology, going into space was expensive to the point that you were never going to make your money back going there. That meant it didn't happen unless the government thought doing so was vital to the national interests (military, spying, the moon shot, the ISS, weather satellites), or some institution was willing to splurge (scientists, universities). About way to make money in space were communication satellites. This will fundamentally change that equation. You will be able to manufacture certain materials you can't make in a gravity well. You will be able to manufacture certain drug that can potentially treat conditions we can't now. No environmental restrictions. You've seen that thing out in the desert where they use a bunch of mirrors to focus light on a tower in the middle so that it creates enough heat to make steam and create power? That's what space based solar energy generation would be like. But because it will be in space it will be 30% efficient. It makes electricity, turns it into a type of radio wave, beams it back to the surface, where antennas catch it and convert it back to electricity.A half a kilometer wide set of mirrors should be enough to meet the electrical needs of New York City. You put it high enough in orbit so that it's only in shade for about 15 or 20 minutes a day. You make another one, put it in the same orbit but just a bit behind, so that it takes up the slack when the first one is in shade. For the rest of the day the second beams its energy to another station where it's sold on the grid. You could do this for ever major city, with enough left over to power most of the rest of the country. And that's just the beginning. There are literal mountains of metals and minerals, as well as endless real estate out there, ripe for the taking. No EPA, no ATF. If you can develop automation far enough, you could make giant cylindrical rotating habitats a few miles wide and multiples of that long. They would be effectively their own small city states, energy independent. You can make multiples of them, connect them together, so that they have room to grow their own food, manufacture their own good, have their own parks; independent nation-state archipelagos designed and built for those that want to live however they want. The resources to build it is just waiting out there. It all becomes possible if you can get the cost of getting into orbit down below a certain level.
