Wow it transports 20 people. ooooh I have an idea, what if we connected a bunch of these together... in a long chain and put them on tracks to make them more energy efficient (and to meet power needs) then ran them along the most popular transportation corridors in major cities! They could even go in tunnels in places like NYC to reduce traffic!Golly Elon is on to something this time!

@JessTheUnstill @paulc God I love my morning bus ride into town. It's so peaceful and I know everyone including the driver and we always sit in the same places.I listen to an audio book or work on math problems and look at the city moving by. Then I walk a few blocks to work in the lovely NYC dawn. Granted I go early enough to avoid rush hour. Which is the secret to having a peaceful soul if you don't want to deal with the stairs in the subway.

@futurebird @cinebox @nblr @johntimaeus those things were used in the first (modern) generation of EVs, such as the GM one back around 2001. I think they were expected to be more durable and less prone to shock than straight copper, but I would GUESS that they were efficient but couldn't carry enough power for today's higher battery capacities and quick charging demands.

@futurebird @johntimaeus Yep. Every wireless inductive-charging EV proposal has failed for this very reason. There’s a reason why EV fast charging stations have water-cooled pipes and giant whirring fans: current creates heat, and charging an EV generates a LOT of heat.Wireless charging efficiency is much lower than wired even at optimal distances, and its efficiency drops off very quickly as the distance between coils increase. That means a lot MORE power is spent on heating the cables, and not transferring energy to the car.Wireless car charging is not going to ever be a reality, unless we’re talking about trickle-charging cars at home with coils that are very closely spaced to each other in which the power lost to inefficiency is acceptable.

@futurebird @cinebox @nblr @johntimaeus those paddles were just big inductors, and the on the car side were sandwiched between two more big inductors.People have been talking about "roads that charge the cars as they drive" for some years. I think those are also inductive, but I don't know for sure. Efficiency seems likely to be low.But there is also talk of charging things via beam formed microwave that could work over a longer distance.

@futurebirdHe certainly has a distinctive design aesthetic.I agree, I don't understand why you'd want to plug in an inductive charging paddle. Sure, no sparks or contacts to wear, but Teslas already have an off-the-shelf solution that does that, and the paddle approach still requires someone (or something) to plug it in. If you're going inductive, why not put the pickup on the underside and raise the transmitter up to it automatically when it parks in a charging stall?

The Sydney Metro!

@futurebird Ah yes. Like a certain Chinese electric vehicle brand that recently had cars stuck on a ferry because they couldn’t unlock the doors as the key server couldn’t be reached. Brakes are the obvious next thing to control remotely. Connectivity and lag are, after all, entirely solved problems.

I'm currently in Spain with little kids and enjoying the ability to just roll a stroller onto an elevator, into the subway and pop up across the city in minutes. How are you going to transmit 240V like that though? Multiple coils? The distance will be at least like 5" or more from the bottom of the car, through the parking surface to the other coil. So you'd probably need the coil array on the base of the car to lower itself and make contact with the ground or it'd be inefficient. But if you're doing all that why not just plug it in at that point?I suppose a car that could plug itself in would be possible, and might use induction. @bplein
