@bot XCode command line tools. I am using a package manager for MacOS called "homebrew". One of the packages in there is too old so I attempted to modify the installation to load the new version of the package. When I did that it complained my "command line tools were too old" and gave me instructions on how to fix it. The timer now just says 5 minutes, whew.

@bot No, this process just relies on the command line tools that XCode installs. The thing I'm trying to actually get running is a weird programming thing that lets you do "time travel debugging" which just means that when you're using a program you wrote with it, you can "rewind" it to any state in the past, and debug it, and keep going. This amazing feature that is being treated like it's brand new, used to be an OS-level feature of the very first Lisp Machine from the 1970s. If you ever had a program have an error, instead of crashing it just paused it at the error and opened a debugger. You could rewind one instruction, fix the error, and then keep going without losing anything.

@pwm @bot yes, the innovation I'd like to build on top of the idea is that you can shard the world into different parts running on different computers. I'm sure someone has done it before though.

@sun @bot I think that's definitely feasible, and I'm the last person to discourage someone from doing something that has already been done. How will parts of the world be divvied up? Will there be some sort of automatic system that does it and reaches some layout consensus? or will it be managed and coordinated by administrators?

@sun@shitposter.world @pwm@pl.absolutelyproprietary.org @bot@seal.cafe Most? MUDS never had enough users to really need sharding, network issues were more of a concern in the era where they were popular iirc. But it's an idea with potential for sure.

@pwm @bot the way I envision it is that you can make a "door" in your map that links to a door in a remote server's map.You will carry over all your items and stats. The issue is that there's nothing to stop someone you link to from making a free super-powered item-dispenser in their world, you go over there and get all that stuff, and then come back to someone else's world with all that stuff. So, to prevent that, the main thing you can carry across will be "keys" which are just a unique identifier that a map can use to do certain things, like open a chest or something. like maybe you can carry over a sword, but it won't work as a sword in the other map, but it can work as a key.

@miscbrains @bot @pwm I could write this fairly quickly in other languages but I'm trying to leverage a programming library that gives you automatic distributed state and permissions, as well as the ability to roll back changes if someone did damage.

@sun@shitposter.world @bot@seal.cafe @pwm@pl.absolutelyproprietary.org yeah- looking at your posts before this- it's kinda like the old unreal portals idea. But that never really worked out with transferring seamlessly into different servers. Obviously 3d games have a lot more baggage to xfer over- but text level games should be pretty "easy" Only issue is setting up an authoritative save server.

@miscbrains @bot @pwm I am thinking about there being a shared consensus-based append-only database for global state. Basically anything goes inside your world but if you want items (beside keys) that can be carried to other worlds, the database will place constraints on what you can write to it as exported items.

@miscbrains @bot @pwm I actually got the idea from a game from the 1990s!At university, someone made a web java applet called "legend of zelda online" and it was a networked "legend of zelda: a link to the past" where multiple links could walk around in a map and explore and fight. The author then made it so that you could run your own server and link them together through doors. This was all around 1998. I used to play it in Netscape Communicator 4 on HP-UX.

@sun@shitposter.world @bot@seal.cafe @pwm@pl.absolutelyproprietary.org isekai inception is flashing before me. It's your show, but i think you'd want to fairly rigorously enforce rulesets/mechanics/powerlevels between the "servers." Gamer brains will gravitate to where the most power is, so making the differentiation thematic/aesthetic/narrative based will help to diffuse that.

@miscbrains @bot @pwm yeah, I am thinking of this as I go along. keys can be free because they just unlock stuff and you can make any key unlock anything you want on your own server. things like weapons I figure that there is that central server that restricts how many and how powerful of items you can "mint". basically it should be a layer3 blockchain lol.
