There was a time, in 1999 when every file on my computer was clearly named, backed up and in the right folder. That file structure is still around... in a folder called "OLD FILES2 Copy"I ... I have some soul searching to do. And by "soul" I mean old hard drives.

@futurebird I also started out with good intentions. Now most files are a pile of stuff on the hard drive. Particularly photos, thousands of them, which are inaccessible because I have to sift through the whole heap to find the one I'm looking for.

@Fragglemuppet The horrors I have seen on student computers.... young people have no notion of putting things in folders because of the cloud and the way "recent" files popup in most apps. It's total chaos.One of the things I teach them is how to tell if a file is on their computer or not. How to put it on removable media. "What if you want to send a copy of videos and photos to a friend? You can't just email it!"But... I need to clean up my own drives and set a better example.

@futurebird 1/2in 1995 I had to stop running my homebrew D&D world because I was doing college full time (18 credit hours) and working full time. I was sure at the time it would only be a few years.Stuff happened, and it wasn't until about 2002 or 2003 that I tried to DM my old D&D world again. About half (maybe less) of my maps, NPC descriptions, notes on various places and environments, etc,

@futurebird what you've described is i think what everyone will go through as they get older. i have never used ia for anything (i can't because all ai systems reject tor browser, wonder why, lol *cough* masssurveillance), but imv, this is one of the only reasons id consider using ai for, to organize my stuff.tell me during a backup when there are conflicts between files and to ask me which one I want to keep, showing me the EXACT conflicts etc. this would require ai running locally on my machine that is fully offline. In order to go online it would need to ask me and why it needs to go online.this would likely be part of some sort of free-license and open source (aka #fos) "reproducible llm build".i love looking at old things but not for weeks on end at the expense of loved ones.
