Sometimes Ali-Express labels clothing designed mostly to appeal and be sized for women as "female sweater" or "female vest" and even "middle aged female overcoat" and once "old woman sweater"This has made me have some uncomfortable silent questions about how the clothing is... raised? Hatched????Then there was "Old man radio big numbers radio clock MP3" which I bought to play SD cards. I hope it's not too old... I will take good care of him.

My students are *fascinated* by my mp3 collection. I explained that I used to rip CDs and tapes and keep folders with every album I've bought. Now, I'll buy it on Apple Music or whatever but then I always make a clean copy and put it on one of 3 SD cards. The poor children have only ever known streaming. "If you buy music you should have a copy of it." radical stuff these days. (I do need to do another export from Apple Music, I've gotten a bit lazy.)

@futurebird "Old man radio big number clock radio mp3 player" that's sounds like they made it just for me. Those descriptions also sound like long-tail search terms. That's kinda clever. Do they have "old man jeans no flat butt." Asking for a friend.

@futurebird I'd like to know how much energy has been wasted, and how many more natural resources have been used up making chips, simply by the corporate mandate that streaming be the normal way to do things, rather than reserved only for live events.

@smirk My greatest copyright crime was making an audio-book Sci-Fi library for my father-in-law when he was recovering from an injured hip. The guy loves classic Sci-Fi so I bought one of those little mp3 players on Ali-Express and a bunch of SD cards. Made tiny labels with the book covers and put one book on each. So it was dead simple to use. 3D printed a little case for the cards too. It was a super cute gift and he loves it. I ought to make one for myself for some dark possible future.

@futurebird my gf only listens to music that she’s ripped from albums that she physically owns. There are times when a new album drops and I’ll have to keep quiet about it while she waits for her cd to arrive in the mail.I love how much that system works for her.

Like... I will pay for music and books. I'm happy to pay. But, I have this quaint notion that if I buy a song I should be able to go back and listen to it again years later without paying again. Also, I always have it in the back of my mind that I might at some point have no income. And the idea that not having income would mean no music? Which I own so much music and ways to play it? Come on. No "new music" OK fine. But literally no music at all? unacceptable.@Nonya_Bidniss

I'm thinking back on how the theatre tech teacher at my high school showed me his reel-to-reel in the projection room and how he literally CUT and TAPED bits of magnetic tape together to make "mixes" ... and also soberly reflecting that me sitting there holding an SD card is the modern equivalent. Feelin real old right now.It feels good though.

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss there's someone on here that does a great job of explaining this. Modern corpratists are trying to move everyone from buying things to *renting* things. People think this is capitalism. It's actually not capitalism--it's feudalism. Capitalism is based on owning, selling and trading capital where everyone theoretically can own at least some capital. Feudalism is where only a few can own things and they rent it, controlling the prices, the capital and revenue.

I try my best to minimize the expense that I have that are "rents" ironically mastodon/fediverse it one of them, but I'm OK with that since like internet access, water, electricity and phone I'm paying every month and getting something every month. The idea that I should have to pay rent to use software, listen to music, is an anathema. Avoiding anything with a reoccurring fee does wonders for your savings. But, it feels like swimming against the tide. @philip_cardella @Nonya_Bidniss

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss a big eye opener for me was what HBO did when it decided to screw over masses of people whose work was distributed on HBO. They changed their name to Max so they could end contacts with content created for HBO. The big one for me was Westworld. A very rewatchable show imo that can't be streamed anymore on Max.

If a business wants people to subscribe rather than delivering a single product for a fee they are asking the customer to trust that they will still be around in the future. There are more opportunities for soft and hard fraud with reoccurring charges. What if there were an additional tax on products sold in such a way? The tax would fund fraud prevention & redemptions for the people who are harmed by such schemes. But also discourage literal "rent seeking"@philip_cardella @Nonya_Bidniss

@futurebird This is a huge problem in my wife's dance dept since she is the production manager for the dept and runs all/most student shows. And every time, when requesting music for the student choreographed pieces, my wife gets a pile of streaming links and has to say "no we need files not links" and "you need to have the right to play this music".*Confusion abounds until they are sorted out, sometimes never.

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss Took family van on recent road trip and remembered it had a CD player. Garage has boxes of CDs from 90’s/00's and it was great to find they still worked. I’d also ripped them years ago, but the logistics of figuring out what device to xfer the files to and then navigating/playing them was way more complicated than just pulling CDs out of travel sleeve and popping into stereo.

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss right? But the streaming is more than controlling rents, of course. It's also about spying on customers. Even if you go around that scam you've got TVs, including the highest end LGs, that are monitoring your *screen* so even if you plugged in a VCR it could analyze what you're watching. Try finding a non "smart" TV anymore. They exist but are rare. And BluRay players usually want Internet access too -- to report usage. We're inviting Big Brother in.

@futurebird one of my favorite thing in the internet was radioblog. There was a flash player widget to play mp3 file from your website and an interface to search for songs. You would usually get multiple hit for a single song, each pointing to a different website with it's own playlist/mix. It was a nice way to find new music

My preference of board games over video games is paying off.But when it comes to software there are time I prefer the rent model. Some software, especially complex software, needs to be frequently updated due to bugs and compatibility with updated OS. Many people underestimate the work involved and revenue stream is important to authors. But other software I buy.

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss This would be why I just bought a brace of new gigantic HDDs for my NAS, because it was full (again). It’s not *all* media, it also hosts TimeMachine backups of three MacBooks, but it is very very full.

@futurebird beside the point, but I'm not sure I'd trust SD cards with backups 👀 aren't they notoriously prone to the flash memory failing? Or is that outdated knowledge?

@Kierkegaanks You know what, I'm confusing "Apple Music" and "iTunes" they are not as it turns out the same. Apple Music is the subscription service. But you can still use just iTunes and the store and buy tracks and save them and back them up.Not true if you just use Apple Music.I think they wish they could get rid of iTunes.

@futurebird @Kierkegaanks To make things even a little more confusing, there is iTunes Match, where you can pay to have songs you have purchased stored in the cloud, and can listen to them on all your devices. This is separate from Apple Music.

@flying_saucers What is better though? Not DVDs or CDs those have failed on my more often than SD cards. Maybe a hard drive... but those also fail. I keep the most important stuff in two places on hardware and one in the cloud and recopy it every few years. I have like a dozen copies of my music library in various stages of its evolution ...

@futurebird afaik the best option is redundant harddrive storage, but that's expensive. Hard disk drives can fail if they experience vibration in operation and ultimately you get what you pay for, but even the worst should be more reliable than SD cards. SSDs from reputable brands are more expensive but probably the best of both worlds? Personally I'd go with an external harddrive though. If you do want to get swanky, look up NAS storage and different RAID setups

@paulc @futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss one of the big turn offs for me on rents WAS software. I was paying Adobe $600 a year to access their suite and THEN they decided that wasn't enough, they were going to train their AI on my content. Bye forever, Adobe. I replaced Acrobat with free software and bought stuff with permanent software to replace Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom and InDesign for $200 only paid once.

@philip_cardella @futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss For personal use I use the Affinity suite which is a one time purchase. I do some side work that must be done in InDesign so I am just using my work license (thankfully Adobe CC licenses can be used on 2 different computers). Once I retire I will probably rent InDesign as I get work and use Affinity Design and Affinity Photo. At work there is no substitute for the Adobe suite. InDesign and InCopy are integrated via another system.

@paulc @futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss my desktop publishing used to be higher need when I was running a non profit. Now? Affinity is getting done what I need so far. Despite several "AI" features in Skylum luminar neo, which I don't use (and I'm not sure most are even generative ai), the core photo editing software on that and rudimentary photo cataloguing has been fine for me.

@stacey_campbell @flying_saucers To be honest for music, if I haven't listened to it for so long that it's rotting on an SD card I would be OK with buying a new copy. However that isn't as easy as it ought to be. I can either try to find an CD and rip it. Or buy it on iTunes and do unspeakable things to get a "real mp3" (it is possible, legal, allowed, just annoying)

@futurebird@philip_cardella @Nonya_BidnissI'm ok with streaming as a service. Like my Mastodon server, I'm paying someone for the electricity, server maintenance, software upgrades, employee pay, etc. Streaming has its place. But I want things like software and media to be available to me on my own computer exclusively in some cases and in those cases I do not want to pay rent on something I'm doing the keeping of already.I've moved from Quickbooks to Gnucash for this very reason.

@futurebird @philip_cardella @Nonya_Bidniss I've been doing some projects in Affinity Publisher just to get a feeling for what it can and cannot do. For the most part Affinity Publisher is solid. And Affinity Designer is much easier to use than Adobe Illustrator. The Affinity suite hits the spot for many people. But in my magazine publishing day job only ID works. I need it integrated with InCopy and a management system to get editors and designers working with each other.

@futurebird Still do buy physical media *and* make a rip back up of them. I OWN the music I buy, and I sustain the artists that self-publish, too.My kids just got onto streaming services, these past 1-2yrs. In the cars, I have a usb drive with *some* music. They like to play streamed stuff from their phones, via *single* channel bluetooth. They are starting to get annoyed at interruptions, hiccups and ADS from the streaming services. They don't mind the low quality of the stream because it's mostly pop stuff, in which *quality* of the music isn't a top priority from the get go, anyways ( ::snark:: )Somehow, I never get ads, hiccups from my little usb drive. And the full digital, over 192kbps multi-channel of quality comes through in full glory. What a thunking...

@futurebirdOne quick trick ...In Linux Format your SD card as btrfs and make the data profile DUP, it will store two copies of each block of the file and btrfs scrub can recover but errors. Of course it cuts capacity in half. Would be nice if there were an error correcting code version that used like 25% more space but could recover sparse bit errors in scrub.@flying_saucers

@futurebird I have gigs of mp3s. Some i acquired via the internet, others are rips of my physical media. Almsot everything i have I have owned, on some form of physical media. I haven't ever gotten down with streaming services. i don't knock anyone for using them but I will defend physical files, yes to me files are physical, because it's a thing you can move, and coppy, and send to someone, sure it's just 0's and 1's, but you can miniuplate those 0's and 1's as you see fit. YOu can import them in to an audio editor, or dj controler software, to mix and play with. YOu can't cut and scratch on spotify. I still have most of my tapes, cd's and records. i"m only 34 but I grew up with my folks media. The first media I remember working with were tapes, then records, then cd's, in that order, actually... no, cd's came before records but only by a few months. I"m blind and autistic, so I was more likely to have a fasenation with that sort of stuff.

No backup, nothing. Luckily I don’t remember much of what I lost, so honestly I haven’t really looked back. Made me realise that stuff on a hard drive is not forever.
