Taco Bell and other public places no longer show the news or TV— instead it’s curated tiktok reels from some sketchy service. Eventually someone will see their own pet or baby on this thing and throw a fit. I saw a “girl with the dogs” video. Did SHE get paid? I doubt it.

I don't know, there is just something very disturbing to me about random intimate moments of people's lives first turning into ad bait online (which is bad enough) then into a packaged content product optimized to meet the need of public spaces. There is no way to connect with the creator, to follow them, or tell them you liked their little creation. The point of "sharing" is gone... this is just... mining. Strip mining of content.

@futurebird its exposure. People die from exposure.

@futurebird Well, in all fairness, a lot of that content is currently shared around SM with no attribution. Yes, that is still crap; no, it's not much different. Not enough people question those who post work of others for their own clicks.

@futurebird Maybe even TikTok itself monetized these posts and creator consent is buried somewhere in their terms of service. I'm not saying it's right—I find it sickening. People just want to reach out, connect, share, and instead they are getting packaged and sold.

@futurebird Worse still, when someone does eventually complain, TikTok will simply point to their TOS and say, "you agree to letting us use/sell your images and videos when you sign up." And then their lawyers will just laugh like Nelson at all the users. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx9kaa7IsBg

@blondino @futurebird there's layers upon layers of this rampant theft of the original content without attribution for marketing purposes, I see it on everything from cat videos to car maintenance and on multiple platforms, for instance the Pakistani family who rescues street cats and rehomes them routinely has videos taken off their own channel and put on Facebook with their credits stripped off. At least the long form industrial process videos tend to get left alone as they are less "cute."

@blondino @futurebird also (as someone who sometimes helps install those screens in various places) the reason it may be done in this manner is conventional broadcasters have more clout to stop unlicensed redistribution, whereas some startup company can claim to provide the content cheaper than doing it properly (even with the companies own marketing material), plus it might be that capitalist businesses don't want to show too much "bad news" (especially with the recent extreme weather)

@futurebird A local sports bar started runs this kind of content on several of the TVs when there aren't enough events to fill all their screens - lots of short video clips, in 5-10 second bites. It's memorizing, which kills conversations, and just gives me a general unwell feeling. Also my kid just won't eat his food, too distracted by the videos.I enjoy their food, and their outdoor patio is nice, but it really makes me not enjoy eating indoors there.
