Baseball is the most naturally dramatic sport. Timed games? It can't compete with the nebulous feeling of listening to baseball on the radio. I've wanted to make a little LED board to show who was on what base and the score... but I couldn't find a clean enough data feed that was free for that...But maybe I should build the board anyway and just sit around being sad until someone makes me a feed.

For those of you who don't follow baseball. NYC has two baseball teams, mostly to be extra. The Yankees have won many more World Series and are probably the best team in baseball. Their stadium is in the Bronx and the cheering rattles my windows. The other team is The Mets, who have a way of doing well once in a blue moon. So it's MUCH bigger deal that they are in the post season at all.Dare I say the words....Subway Series?A city divided! I think that has only happened once before!

You would think I'd like the Yankees better living in the Bronx... However know what baseball team a New Yorker might support is one of the deep mysteries of science. Oh their dad is a Yankees fan so Yankees right? Nope! They live in Queens? Means nothing. The Mets are objectively cooler, however. Even Yankees fans know it's cooler to be a Mets fan.

@futurebird It's happened 14 times! But only one of those was Yankees-Mets, in 2000.Yankees-Dodgers happened 7 times (1941, 47, 49, 52, 53, 55, 56). Yankees-Giants happened 6 times (1921, 22, 23, 36, 37, 51).From 1947-56, 7 of the 10 World Series were Subway Series.The only ones out of the 14 that the Yankees lost were 1921, 22 and 55.

@futurebird Sadly, the reason you can't get a data feed for real time base positions is the same reason you can't get one for financial markets. People ruin everything.Definitely agree that baseball on the radio wins, though. Mets have some great on-air talent.

@futurebird My Bronx-born wife was a black sheep for being the only Mets fan in her family, and is even more so now that she's become a Phillies fan. She'll hope for the Mets to win another World Series if they prevail tonight, but we don't plan to watch any more games. With the Orioles out, I don't have another dog in this race, and the ads have been driving us both up the wall.

@futurebird I was living in Queens during the only subway series. No one outside of the two teams fans seem to care. I was an outsider from Akron so the buzz of both teams being in the world series was very subdued compared to how Ohio reacts to that kind of sports event. With that said, GO METS and the Yankees still suck

@futurebird [Grumbling softly in Chicagoese.] Yeah, Chicago's got two of those "blue moon" teams, both with stadiums adjoining the red line. Which does go underground through downtown. NYC has to change between the 7 and the 4 at Grand Central. Also, more like *richest* team in baseball. They spoil their fans with all that winning. Makes them soft, like the pretzels. What they need is a tenacious curse, that can only be broken by decades of continuous heartbreak.

@futurebird That's fascinating, because it sounds like a very different supporter culture to AFL/AFLW in Australia.Especially in Melbourne (where there are 9 teams), it's not uncommon to find whole extended families of Essendon/Carlton/Collingwood/Hawthorn supporters.Great grandad's cousin played for Richmond back in the '30s, and the family has barracked for the Tigers ever since.Most of the clubs are member-owned, so people quite literally feel a sense of ownership over their teams.Also, once you pick a club, you're stuck with 'em. You first moved to Australia in the '90s and chose North Melbourne because Wayne Carey was winning premierships, but they've been awful ever since?Too bad, you're stuck with North.

@futurebird @jsgjames @LinuxAndYarn But if you really want to have fun in bumper cars don't call a lawyer, go play Whirlyball.What's Whirlyball - it's a game like basketball, i.e. two teams of five, and the idea is to get a ball through a hoop at either end of the court. The hoop is mounted vertically, the ball is a whiffle ball, and you can only touch the ball via Jai Alai scoops. Oh, and did I mention that it is played in souped up electric bumper cars?We've paid extra (under the table) to have the power (and thus the speed) increased. The game gets downright bloody when we do that - a head-on collision between two cars, each moving at 7+mph creates quite a bump.For some reason the folks with the courts keep rejecting my idea of replacing the hoop with a block of wood and replacing the Jai Alai scoop/wiffle ball with a throwing ax.

@futurebird i lived in san francisco for 20 years but when i first moved to the bay area as a kid we lived in berkeley with my uncle, and not only were he and my cousin A's fans, this was 1972, so naturally i became an A's fan for life - well until this year - i just can't with a vegas A's or the giants (boo NL), so it's the stockton ports for me!
