I can't use the new dark theme in mastodon 4.3 :(They made the regular dark them darker with low contrast, which is only readable for me in a room with low lighting. The high contrast dark theme makes the text bright white and changes nothing else, which is painful to read. Too much eye strain.Maybe it's time for me to look into using a client app on PC or something.

The "phanpy" web client is alright. The "mentions" and "notifications" pages bafflingly don't support your notification filters yet, but the "mentions only" mode of the "notifications" page has some settings that are practical for making spam accounts go away at least, so it has a practical way of reading mentions during spam waves but it's just not the page called mentions :P

I can't prove it, but I've got this theory that flat design in general and UI designs from companies like google and fbook (intentionally or otherwise) optimize for creating a baseline amount of confusion and eye strain to chip away at your willpower so you're more likely to click on ads, much in the same way that stores often put snacks and candy in the check out isles to encourage impulse purchase caused by decision fatigue. And so we should go out of our way to avoid copying these designs.

If Mastodon or any other org really wants to make the UI more accessible and less confusing to new users, then they should make things look different in proportion to their difference in meaning and function. A reply in a thread should look different than the first post in the thread. Editable text should look significantly different from buttons and both should look significantly different from static text. Etc.

@aeva I dig how @grunfink's snac (https://codeberg.org/grunfink/snac2) displays threads as far as other ActivityPub implementations go.
