It turns out copying 128gb of TV shows to a tiny all-metal USB flash drive heats it up a surprising amount.40.2°C, that's 104°F. Hot to the touch!

@foone When this baby reaches 88 files per hour, you're gonna see some serious shit...

@foone I have a Sandisk double-ender USB-Micro/A drive that will happily heat up all the way to where it crashes.

@fooneMy PNY 64GB gets uncomfortably hot when run as my Windows 11 Win2Go Volume, and that is not much bandwidth, just tons of utilization. It would probably melt at full tilt 🤣

@foone I mean, it *is* a 'flash' drive. You're literally using the power of lightning ⚡ to trap the data in there.

@foone I suspect it's that thermonuclear silver sandisk drive. They get molten hot, yet perform perfectly fine. :ablobfoxhyperthinking:

@foone a couple if things, if the section of the drive you are spot checking is metal, the temperature might read lower than what it is. The picture is also slightly out of focus, that can cause a reading of a lower temp. I would say it’s at least 40C, but likely higher.

@fox @foone Know the SanDisk model or series offhand? I use one for Wii U storage that gets warm, but not too hot to touch. Thought that was odd until I saw this.

@iDaveI suspect it's the sandisk ultra flair. The housing is metal and therefore you notice the flash running quite warm, more than with a regular drive. This would be supported by @foone's thermal image showing the body at a lower temperature as it reflects infrared, compared to the plastic.
