Watching footage of a Union leader's rather nice house and I think I'm supposed to be mad about this?Quick question: Do we think that *anyone* should have very nice houses? Eg. Is it OK for Bill Gates or Elon to have a very expensive house? What are the criteria that must be met for it to be "OK" for a person to be well off? Is it ever OK? If so why?

Is it "OK" for me, a little school teacher to have a $400 fountain pen or nah?

@futurebird It absolutely is OK, and possibly totally necessary.

I'm being sarcastic, but lets also consider that the same people waving around photos of the houses of one of the oldest and most important unions in the country like it's a scandal were also upset that Tim Walz didn't have millions of dollars and such a house. Because really, what kind of man works in government for that long as his most valuable asset is his pension? *grabs pearls*

@futurebird The question is irrelevant (if it even makes sense at all). The question we should be asking instead is how to ensure that nobody's living standards fall below a given minimum, which includes (among many other things) basic housing.

@futurebird besides, are we supposed to think that "a nice house" is somehow comparable to the private islands, multiple mansions, private planes etc?

@futurebird It's ok for people to have nice houses. It's not ok that some people don't have homes.Pretty straightforward innit?

There's a difference between having some nice luxuries and having an utterly ridiculous amount of personal property, more than anyone can reasonably use. @futurebird

@futurebird Only if you received the expensive gift after assigning the child an unearned A grade, if I understand the Supreme Court correctly.

@ehproque Most people can't distinguish between a million in net worth and several hundred million... Those things look superficially the same because there really is only so much one can buy for personal use before you have to move on to purchasing media companies, judges and politicians. The *real* luxury items.

@futurebird EVERYONE should have a nice fountain pen! đBut... beware the dangers involved. Nobody owns "a fountain pen", at least not for long. You wake up some days, months, or years after that first purchase to realize you own a collection of fountain pens đ±

@futurebird It reminds me a bit of my grandmother-in-law getting upset that somebody getting welfare would own a tv. People get weird about possessions.

@futurebird I used to resent conspicuous consumption. Then, after years of hearing my rich boss complain about the endless construction projects in his mansion, the ritzy automobiles that kept breaking down, landscaping disasters, pool issues, etc⊠I felt grateful that I didnât have any of those problems. Now when I see a huge gaudy house for sale, it literally makes my back ache, thinking about all of the maintenance involved. No thank you.

@futurebird to take to school? Itâll disappear. If you want an expensive fountain pen, keep it at home and for special occasions. Unless youâre loaded and can afford to lose it, in which case knock yourself out.

@futurebird @ehproque Was about to comment this as well ⊠itâs effective propaganda because it exploits cognitive biases ⊠which is honestly 90% of the rightâs messaging anymore ⊠just lie and distort truth in ways that intuitively seem âbelievableâ if you lack critical thinking skills â which most people absolutely lack

@futurebird one of the most shocking things the UK found, regarding Brexit and Russian interference, was how cheap it was to buy politicians. I bet you couldn't even buy a small island with that little money!

@futurebird this kind of thinking is so ingrained from when I was poor that now I worry my house is "too nice" for my income level and that I have to justify it to everyone who knows me. It's not even a very fancy house.

@futurebird I won't deny anyone a nice house, but a house so large you need staff to sweep the floors is ridiculous.
