@stux@mstdn.social Yeah it's shit, you gotta untick the "sponsored shortcuts" thing here (on the settings button). Yes, this should come disabled by default. I guess you could just fork it and make it default but it sounds like more work than just unticking this xd

@stux I know that the whole advertisement thing in Firefox is not great. But honestly, it's still my favourite browser and I want its development to be sustainable. So I also think that they should experiment with income streams to achieve that. Thus I'm personally fine if I see stuff like Adidas on the start page as long as it is ethical stuff and I still have the possibility to remove it.

Dirty Little secret most people don't know is that most web browsers are either written by Google (via chromium), or substantially supported by funding from Google to keep the search engine as Google. One of the immediate outcomes of the recent antitrust suit against Google for this practice is therefore going to be that many web browsers are scrambling for new sources of revenue. But I will say, when you realize just how much revenue Firefox has been earning, it seems like they should be more than capable of maintaining a web browser and email client forever based on money they should have in the bank...

@jrod3737 @stux That browser appears to just be chromium on windows and safari webkit on ios - sure they wrote a custom GUI, but what actually does the rendering is existing web engines. For me it's Emacs Web Wowser, or lynx, or w3m or netsurf or wget.

@stux How will this project continue without making money? Those who criticize Mozilla should donate 3-5 million euros first!

@sj_zero @stux > But I will say, when you realize just how much revenue Firefox has been earning, it seems like they should be more than capable of maintaining a web browser and email client forever based on money they should have in the bank...But if Mozilla spends all its money on software development, then who's going to do all that questionable political activism that nobody asked for? :blobcat-sad:

@stux recently reloaded my laptop and signed into Firefox again with my profile on linux. It carried over all my settings and history EXCEPT for my default search engine (changed back to Google) and sponsored shortcuts (turned back on). That seems like very intentional behavior since all of my other strict privacy settings all stayed intact and synced properly.

@stux I used Firefox happily for many years, so was very disappointed by their recent move towards ads and AI. Several weeks ago uninstalled Firefox from both phone and desktop (using DuckDuckGo on the phone and Tor on desktop. Giving Librewolf a try on desktop too, though that’s built on Firefox so may not be around for long…).
