Growing up in the 80s and 90s due mostly to ominous news stories I remember as a kid being very sad that all of my friends with divorced parents would have to live lives of crime and be criminals, or otherwise bad people. This, of course, didn't happen. And the "divorce epidemic" ended, now people get married later, get married less often, but are more likely to stay together. The horde of "latch key kids" failed to ruin society and no one ever talks about it.

@futurebird Well, it's greatly a matter of perspective. I can assure you that when the Nazis were getting their butts handed to them, they thought it was Darth Vader himself depriving them of dreams and justice, and that's why you just give it God, and remember that it's his judgment that counts, not some Nazi's opinion. Also bear in mind what they did, that they should reap as they sow.

@futurebird also, the “crack baby” fear mongering? They’d show videos of low-birth-weight babies with tremors and predict low-intelligence, lives of crime, and future drug addiction. Premature babies weigh less and often have those tremors. Yeah, crack usage resulted in earlier labor, so they were often born prematurely, but they were otherwise normal for preemies. And a decades-long study shows no lingering effects on behavior or intelligence.https://www.courts.ca.gov/documents/BTB_23_PRECON_Poverty_Simulation_3.pdf

@futurebird It's profoundly frustrating that the cycle of a given moral panic—or of a prominent series of them—somehow repeatedly fails to result in accountability for the people who amplified these false stories. Sometimes people lament the fragmentation of news sources. They long for the days when everyone just watched the same few networks. And yes. ABC news in 1987 was less extreme than Fox News is today in many ways... but I think we've blocked out a lot of the nonsense that *everyone* watched at took as gospel. For example that "crack babies" exist and were going to cause a crime wave. Really the whole way they reported on drugs... "The Gays" (exotic and disturbing people) DIVORCE and Single Moms.

What even is a "latch key" anyway? I've never heard that term used in any other context so I've assumed it was some kind of tragic child-friendly door lock. I also remember, as a kid, I thought the main problem with "latch key kids" was that they didn't lock the doors properly an The Crime would get them. Many major media sources are still terrible in some ways... and some are worse-- but I don't think the golden age was all that golden.

@futurebird A key hung from a string around the neck to unlock the door was the impression I picked up at the time. I was a latchkey kid because of divorced parents, but I actually had to unlock a combination lockbox at the side of the house to get the key to get in the side door. @cykonot @maco I think it's a mistake to connect the phrase "crack baby" to anything scientific or as potentially useful as studies of the impact of drugs on infant health. @futurebirdIn the UK front doors often have two locks, a Yale type and a Chubb. The Yale has a latch which sets the lock as open, closed but openable with one turn of the key, or needing two turns of the key.Often, in daytime, the Chubb is left unlocked and the Yale is set so the door can be opened with a single turn of the key. At night the Chubb is locked and the Yale latch is set to need two turns. The Yale key is referred to as the latch key.

@futurebird I’ve always wondered that too. I’ve never heard the term “latch-key” in any other context. The wiki page seems to say the term “latch-key child” was first used in a Canadian radio broadcast, so perhaps the term “latch-key” is/was more common in Canada?Similarly, there is a New Order song with the lyric “don’t wanna own a key,” which is also an unfamiliar phrase to me.

@futurebird back in the 1980s, the city libraries where I lived carried quite a few newspapers; several from various small to medium towns in the western USA, several more from large cities all over the USA, and a few from non-USA cities. It seemed all the USA newspapers were unified by their love for Ronald Reagan ... easily the most trump-like of pre-trump presidents. And they loved trump too, even though he kept failing to build the enormous buldings he kept promising to build.

@futurebird @jmax Silly little detail, but why was it called latch key kids? Did people assume that kids would find their way home, but not know how to operate a key? Or that they would lose the key and someone would find it and be able to break in at any given time?Smart thinking: let's leave the door open, so that nobody can get the key.🙄As far as I remember, as soon as I could walk myself home, I was letting myself in, with a key.

@futurebird @jmax Yes, saw that. To me, a latch means something that keeps a door or gate shut, but not necessarily locked.A latch key is therefore a contradiction.I just take it to mean that parents left the door open for their kids, but that seems so illogical to me.We live in super safe The Netherlands, so our kids could walk/bike home from school pretty early. I guess they were 7 or 8. As soon as we no longer had to pick them up, they got a key to let themselves in.

@futurebird Oh you Youngs. Latchkey Kid is a term from WWII, for children whose mothers worked, while their fathers were away, fighting in the war. When the term was re-adopted in the 1980s, it was assumed by news editors that everyone in their audience remembered the term from the 1940s. That’s why you never heard it explained. Your grandmother knew what it meant.

@futurebird "Latchkey kids" was a term I didn't understand when I heard it on the news as a kid in the 1980s. It's one of those terms like "Gen X" which apparently applied to me, but I didn't realize at the time.My parents were still married, but often both working or out of the house. So it was routine for us to let ourselves in and be at home for awhile for a good chunk of grade school.Snippets of news reports I would hear at the time made latchkey kids sound like some poor unfortunates.

They also were birthed out of the Watergate generation who above all else wanted their reporting to reveal truth, so far as it can exist. Really, even THAT is a blip on the history of journalism.

@futurebird growing up in the 70s and 80s in a rural area I first thought latch-key kids was a term for the "city kids" who lived in the crime ridden cities where they had to lock their doors because when we got home we just opened the door and went in 'cuz it wasn't even locked. Also there was so much divorcing going on in my own family I couldn't figure out what the big deal was over the "epidemic of divorce"...TBH things kinda improved after divorces like why would you hold into something that is broken and can't be fixed?

@futurebird Don't forget the missing black fathers. It wasn't for decades later that I learned about the school to prison pipeline. They were missing because of unfairly applied laws, not by choice.

@futurebird @jmax The people who complain about latchkey children also seem to reminisce about their childhoods where children were free to roam outside all day, only to be seen at dinner time.

@paulc @jmax It's just to make moms feel bad for having jobs. That's so obvious now looking back on the nonsense.

@futurebird @jmax I think so. My mom was working before that term was used. I never heard criticism of her being a working woman. But who would criticize an administrator of a Jewish school.

@futurebird People want to go back to before knowing how much the media lies.Or how much they massage the truth without being legally liable for actual lies, so neener neener neener you can't call them liars. But I'm really hesitant to take something as fact purely because it was on TV, now. That used to be different.

@morachbeag @futurebird The current trajectory of society chugging along as usual is not that great and seems awful skewed to the right. Is that because latch key kids have not lived up to their criminal potential? Did the failure of DnD players to summon Satan result in the right wing Christians hating women and migrants instead? Did the metal failing to bring about the anarcho revolution result in the excess authoritarians we see today?

@rlcw @morachbeag @futurebird game pitch: travel back in time to the 1980s and help D&D players summon satan to save the future!

@futurebirdI remember hearing talk back in the early 80s about "gamers in the culverts" like the world was full of crazed LARPers. I figured if it was true I'd probably know the youngest ones from school and they were cool so 🤷🏻♀️
