My husband has never shared in my love of fancy pens because "they are impossible to use for left handed people"What makes a good pen for the left-handed? Fast drying ink? He uses bics and it's breaking my heart.

@futurebird I’m with him. Even soft pencil lead will smudge for a lefty. It’s probably the mainreason why Leonardo da Vinci wrote backwards, from right to left, in his manuscripts, although it’s often said he did it as a way of encoding his words. But hold a mirror up to a page and it’s perfectly legible.

@futurebird have you looked into something like the Zebra Sarasa Dry refills? They are quick drying and work in the Zebra Sarasa Grand pen body, which is a much nicer pen than a BIC: https://www.zebrapen.com/pages/sarasa-grand-gel-retractable-penAnother path is something like a Retro 51 or Parker Jotter with Jetstream SXR-600 refills— the best ballpoint ink available. Lots of nice design options in this space. @futurebird Some nibs and ballpens don't work right when used left-handed. You're dragging them over the paper at a different angle (more often pushing rather than pulling) and results in them running dry.Cheap ballpens at least do work fine at any angle.

@futurebird Being left handed at writing is hard enough on its own, I assure you. We need all the breaks we can get!I heard Leonardo DaVinci actually wrote backwards not as a "secret writing" mechanism but to make it easier to write left-handed. I have to say that many times I was very very tempted to start writing backwards (but getting the hang of it was just a bit more time and effort investment than I was willing to put in at the time.)Another thing that helped a lot was notebooks with binding on the other side (or on the top.) Hard to write when the binding is in your way...

@futurebird I have a left handed nib in one of my Lamy Safari pens for when I’m maintaining my ambidextrous-ish writing. I paid less than 30$ and it works well for me.For inks… it varies pretty significantly even within brands in my experience. Probably best to check out reviews based on the colours he likes on a site like MountainOfInk.com

@futurebird I was until recently solely left-handed when it came to writing. What made the difference for me was using an F or EF nib. Also it turns out fountain pen ink dries faster than ballpoint ink, so I no longer have a blue crescent on my left hand. Also using a light pressure helps. Ballpoints really need lefties to push; fountain pens you can just sweep lightly across the page.

@futurebird Actually as the dad two two lefties they had great trouble using my fountain pens b/c their southpaw smudged the ink as they wrote. The only fix was to help them write with their hands elevated. They eventually gave up. Now they only text me.

@futurebird Lefty who found fountain pen bliss: and yep, fast drying *waterproof* ink did it (so your skin’s moisture can’t smudge).Mont Blanc Permanent Black. The only issue, it dries in the pen, so I have a little jar with some (now black) windex in it, which dissolves dried ink from the nib, then you just dry / scribble it out.

@futurebird Bics are terrible for lefties. You need to spend more money, sadly. I am using Pilot V5 (extra fine) these days which are adequate. The best is to write in Arabic or Hebrew which were clearly invented by left/handed people.

@futurebird my pandemic project was learning to write nicely as a lefty and so picked up fountain pens. Depending on the style of writing and the ink, I might keep a Kleenex (no moisturizer) or a paper towel folded or cut to size and rest it under my hand while I'm writing. It flattens really wet shading inks so if I'm using those I'll do the proper hovering on my pinky knuckle or whatever, but for lazy daily writing it's fast, clean, and easy and I've started doing it with pencil and ballpoint.

@futurebird I’m a lefty who writes with fountain pens, but it does mean a different grip and orientation to the paper, which I recognize is a lot to re-train as an adult. I got tired of having to cope with the spine of notebooks and the smudging and dirty hands while still quite young (middle school ish) and solved it by rotating the paper 90 degrees clockwise and writing towards myself instead of across, and still do so. This makes the relationship of the pen nib and hand essentially the same as a righty, and moves the path of the hand away from the text. Maybe more of an intervention than he’s game for or compelled to do, of course. Personally I’m perpetually upset this isn’t just how lefties are taught from the jump.

@futurebird Our singer is a left handed fountain pen user. He writes "overhand" style - holding the pen above the writing area rather than below. This style, together with oblique nibs, makes fountain pen writing left handed a breeze with a bit of practice. Many left handed writers will remember using pens like Papermate, Sakura Jelly Roll, Uniball Signo, etc., all of which have smooth but slow drying inks. For most left handers, if you wanted to use these pens, you had to adapt your physical writing style or accept ink covered pinky fingers. The same holds true for fountain pen inks and pens.
