there is a doll that is always seated in chair d-42 on the city's oldest and least-used metro line. as long as anyone remembers, the doll has never left its seat, even as the intercom announces "last stop, please exit the train". some days a passenger will sit with the doll. often, the passenger is lonely. maybe the doll is as well. the two might chat. the doll is a skittish, high strung little thing, and the passenger will likely find themselves adopting a calm manner in response. the doll and the stranger will chat, as they have no other reason to be seated there; the train is never full. the doll will tell the stranger stories. stories of witches, angels, magic, clockwork, and other, more mundane things. the passenger will probably feel a little saddened by this. how will they explain to it that those things don't exist anymore? the angels were burned for fuel, the magic died on factory floors, and the witches left so long ago. the doll doesn't know this, of course. it believes that the bright lights of the city are that of magic lamps, not cold flourescent tubes. nobody has the heart to tell it overwise, especially after it tells the passenger of its Witch and how they were going to leave on the train together. it always remarks on how it must have missed a stop.
