why did we invent a new kind of battery that can burst into flames when punctured or bent and then started GLUING it into everything?

@foone to make you buy more things, and occasionally break rule zero?

@foone well we glue it because we don't want to get sued when some dip shit end user damage the battery and burn their household down.

@foone Because glue is always cheaper than engineering.

@foone don't forget it is corroding and even if you din't puncture it can ballon and destroy the device it is glued into

@foone it was that stupid infatuation with "thin" electronics, sacrifice safety/battery life/being able to hold them without scalding yourself all to make it sharp enough to cut bread and crack in half if you breathe on it too heavily, and nice and non user-servicable.I miss pre-thin where battery packs were just misshapen enclosures of massive amounts of 18650 cells.

@foone One of the reasons (for hazardous batteries being glued in everything) may be that most of the talent designing such everythings are "just following orders" and compromising on safety/ ecological / ethical aspects.

@foone if they screwed it to the board it'd never make it out of the factory 🤷

@foone Don't worry, to unstick the adhesive all you have to do is add heat.

@foone I can imagine it was regularly pitched to shareholders as an anti tampering security feature.

@foone Seriously!Like I get not wanting it to flop around, but just the tiniest hint of sticky tape or even just mechanical mechanisms (plastic holding tabs or etc) are good enough. But also, why are they wrapping them in simple foil and not, say, plastic like some replaceable phone batteries used to use) or metal (like 18650s.) Even just a thin, weak layer would still be better than a simple weak foil...

@foone afaik these cells still have the best capacity to weight rate and are fairly cheap. So basicly any other option makes the devices heavier, with shorter battery life and possibly more expensive. So in a nutshell: most consumers would not pay more for the non-firecracker option?

@fooneMy shaver doesn't have the battery glued in, it just refuses to work with a cable plugged in, and the battery only lasts three years. No, they don't sell replacement batteries, it's officially not replaceable, even though the manual has instructions for removing the battery for recycling.

@fooneBecause gluing it in prevents you replacing it when it degrades forcing you to buy a new gadget.@recantha

@foone because if the battery weren't glued in, then the battery would need to have its own rigidity to prevent it from being damaged, and regulatory labels, and we'd need a battery door, all of which would make the device containing the battery even thicker, and thickness is allegedly bad
