There have been a few times in my life when I was "in danger" and had to run away. And in both cases I can't remember the running (or swimming part.) Just seeing "the danger" then... I was with my family or back on the beach or whatever. 1. The time I was snorkling and discovered the drop off unexpectedly. I swam back to shore but do not remember this.2. Watching salmon and then seeing a black bear. I ran back to the other side of the river but do not remember this. Is this a thing?

I guess with the snorkeling the danger was just in my mind. But, I just remember seeing the deep dark of the ocean and ... then I was on the beach.

@futurebird I believe the sudden fear can induce a trauma-like response which can supress memory

@futurebird seems a good strategy of fight or flight. (the whole "standing up straight" to appear bigger to bears seems ... dumb)

@futurebird It is a thing for me, at least. It happened once when a group of friends was holding me down for a joke - next thing I know I’m across the room. Apparently I did minor violence along the way. (Seriously, they were just joking about making me watch something on TV that I thought was very silly, but somewhere a panic switch flipped or something.).

@HoustonDog Maybe it makes sense if the bear has noticed you. If you see a bear they are very large and I think most people will just try to not be near the bear anymore. Just my two cents.

@aprilfollies It's very strange because I remember everything so well right up until the ESCAPE NOW then it's just blank. Maybe making memories isn't a priority when in a panic so there are none.

@futurebird That actually seems a very plausible hypothesis. A lot of trauma response seems (to me) to be, “whatever thinking helps you to survive at the time.”

@futurebird @aprilfollies That’d be my theory too: “let’s not waste effort on memory recording right now.”I was hit on my bike by a car (very slowly, my fault) and I remember nothing between ‘uh oh’ and me standing next to my bike.

@futurebird Yep, sudden pain or loss of balance can also prompt your lower brain to automatically put your higher brain on ‘pause’. Apparently an instinctual response is quicker than trying to reason about what to do.

@futurebird "I guess with the snorkeling the danger was just in my mind."I'll hijack this a bit: we live in a "paradise Island" kind of place with lots of tourists coming for the beaches and the sea. They go swimming, diving, para sailing, hiking, grilling...And more of them die in snorkeling accidents than in all other activities combined. If you felt in danger you may very well have been. It's *very* easy to get in trouble without even realizing it before it's too late.

@futurebird when I was a kid running around my grandparents' farm, I saw a black hose, and being a kid decided to jump on it. To my surprise I jumped _over_ it. That's when I realised — or my conscious brain at least — that the "hose" was a red-belly black snake. They're not aggressive, but very venomous. We tend to think of our conscious brains as "us" but really we're a collection of processes, many of which never reach conscious awareness, at least not without considerable processing.

@futurebird nope, I remember the whole damn thing. Was snorkeling, from a sailboat with family, off Crystal River, saw a 6-foot-ish shark a little too close and interested, yelled "Shark" (through a snorkel) and swoosh-boom, levitated right up the side of the boat and in, followed a second or two later by my father, who grabbed my little brother who was kicking feet in the water.

@futurebird It happens. The one time I was mugged, I was walking home at night with a bag of groceries, and surrounded by a group of teens. One of them hit me, and I dropped the groceries, started flailing till there was an opening. I ran like hell. Only isolated memories were like a slide show: Footsteps in chase, the church half a block from home, stairs to my apartment. That was it, even immediately after.

@futurebird I guess it was. I don't really remember. <grin> I can think of other INCIDENTS that were scarier, but this was one where I had to (or at least could) take action to save myself, and that might be different. Auto accidents, falls, those times, by the time I knew it was happening, it was too late to do much, and I could kind of pull back and take the ride, unpleasant as it was.
