I'm hiding here from Tumblr. I made a joke* there, and now in response people are trying to send me links to slavoj zizek clone fucking.I don't know what that is and I don't want to find out, so I'm going to just do mastodon for the rest of today.* this is a type of humorous trick people do on other social medias. I know y'all don't get or understand them here, but they're a big thing elsewhere.

These days, however, in the age of AI generated images of whatever-someone-typed-into-a-search-box I will actively avoid any such abomination...

@foone I currently cannot print from my Ubuntu laptop despite spending a bit of time removing all traces of printing software that I could find and reinstalling. And despite switching to Ubuntu from Gentoo and Debian precisely to avoid having to worry about this basic infrastructure that should work. So I have to make a pdf then email it to my phone and print from there, which often works. When I need to print, which is surprisingly often given it is 2024.

I have a bastard of a networked printer that doesn't worked networked (the DHCP keeps dropping) and while linux supports it, it does so with a binary driver. the binary driver only includes x86 and x64 executables, so you can't run it off a raspi without some serious hackery. that's why I'm on mastodon. someday I'll get that stupid printer working

@mei @foone i've gotten up to some bullshit with QEMU userland and bedrock simultaneously, it just winds up being slow. that's not really a problem for a printer driver, though.the only issue is that i don't know if bedrock works properly with RPi-type devices very well, since it has to hijack init and such and some SBC bootloaders do not put up with that shit.

@foone my old and trusted hp 1050n also started dropping DHCP and in the end i came to the conclusion that there might a problem with the logic board (probably a faulty capacitor somewhere. i didn't have the tools and the time then for a real analysis). I did however find a replacement board on aliexpress and just thought "cheap enough to try" and it has been working like a charm ever since.

@foone I used to have a lot of trouble with printers in the early- and mid-2000s, so the few times I've had to purchase a new printer (really just three times since then), I've made sure to get something that's known to be compatible. In the last two decades or so, the only printing issues I've had were either in windows or because Firefox's built-in PDF reader just produced blank pages when printing a couple PDFs (I had to save them and open them in Okular, which worked flawlessly).

@foone Sorry but no. It's entirely untrue. People are just unwilling to actually try."Another social media thing? No thanks!" is what I hear from people who "maintain" a social media presence to advertise their work."But who is on there?" is what I hear from friends who just "consume" social media.Any dummy can do it! But nobody except people with Linux/BSD on their box seems to be willing to make the effort. For entirely non-technical reasons in my experience. Anyways, printer drivers optional! (Yes I am frustrated. Sorry.)
