@futurebird I use cheap Fitbit alternatives from time to time when I'm on a wellness kick, but after a few months they either break or I get tired of wearing them. So for a few months out of the year I wear a smart(ish) watch and the rest of the year no watch.

@futurebird I keep intending to buy a regular watch, but everytime I look, I see only watches I know I will hate, all priced more than I can afford. I just want a watch that displays the correct time, isn't too difficult to set, has long battery life and easy to replace batteries. And apparently I have no idea how to find that.

@llewelly I generally enjoy my smart watch... but every now and then I start thinking I want one of these:https://www.slow-watches.com/24-hour-one-hand-watch/But then I get mad that I can't just download and app that makes my smart watch do that... (there are such apps but they aren't fully integrated like the default faces)

@futurebird love the concept, but I definitely can't afford to spend $300 on a watch, and honestly ... I only need a watch when I'm away from my computer, and in that case I'm either doing yardwork, or helping someone's endless remodeling projects, and those watches don't look like they'd survive a day of that kind of work.

@equiraptor I thought my smart watch was silly... until I broke my leg and had to do a long recovery that was very hard. Being able to turn things on and off from the watch, and send quick texts was HUGE. Also being able to control things with voice commands? Amazing. And paying for the bus with crutches and a bag just using my wrist? Life saver.

@futurebird @FediThing yes, exactly, like Casio WS-B1000. It's plastic, it has an LCD screen, it counts steps, it synchronizes step data to your phone, it synchronizes time from your phone, it can help you find your phone if you don't remember where you placed it, and the battery lasts two years.

@futurebird I wear a normal watch, (and feel "naked" without one). Currently a Timex with a chronograph - but cheaper than it looks, less than £50 (I don't spend large amounts on watches, its overkill to just tell the time and a security risk). I shun many modern digital watches as the packed LCD is "too busy" with my ageing eyesight, and was slightly concerned when many I did think were suitable were tagged "Seniorenuhr" on online sales portals 👴🏽

@futurebird I had to note the time and make notes whenever I did anything at my job. On the day I retired I removed my watch and put it on the handlebars of my motorcycle. I never looked at the watch face again. I sold the bike over a decade ago when I became too old and sore to ride. I insisted that they take the watch with them. I now very often do not even know what month it is.

@futurebird love the last option 😉I chose the first one option but here's a bit of an elaboration. I do have a watch, although I don't wear it when I'm home (which is often because I freelance and am often just chilling at home). It's an "automatic", meaning mechanical but self-winding as long as you keep wearing it, a drawback being it doesn't keep time at home because I'm not wearing it then. It's a good watch though, and has served me well 🙃

@futurebird part of the reason I stopped wearing watches was due to banging against the keyboard when I type (I am almost always typing something), and my wrist swells and shrinks over the course of a day enough that a regular band starts out too loose, and then too tight. My Zox band for my Emeterm has been awesome though, and if I ever got another watch, I would definitely be putting a Zok band on there, as it's infinitely adjustable.

@futurebird @tantramar @itsshevee I had the same issue - I relied on a calendar app that was specifically tailored to teachers, so you could put just about any kind of schedule in there. I can’t make a recommendation, as it’s been a few years, and I never used it in conjunction with an Apple Watch as I didn’t own one yet. Anyway, worth checking out the teacher apps for this kind of thing. The trick is wading through all the useless spreadsheets-in-disguise apps. iDoceo was the last app I used, but I can’t remember if I leaned on the calendar functions. I used it more for the seating plans, which showed me to do quick attendance and spot evaluations.

@futurebird I have a laptop, a smartphone and a tablet, but on my wrist I wear an automatic mechanical watch. No collector’s item, no status symbol, just a time piece.

@futurebird @itsshevee I was going to recommend Fantasical but the Watch version seems even more limited than Apple Calendar’s. I use Calendar and Fantastical on my various other Apple gear and I don’t see and issue with Google’s calendars, but you are a teacher and have a much more structured day than me. Are you looking for something that shows free time better?

@paulc @itsshevee I just want the google calendar to be as nicely connected as the apple calendar without having to try to synch them which doesn't work well for a variety of reasons. For example google calendar will not play nice with widgets.

@futurebird @itsshevee I have to start playing with this calendar stuff more. Unfortunately for Fantastical watch widgets I would have to upgrade from my legacy license which would be too expensive for me. If you scroll down on this page you can see a descprion and a photo of the Fantastical Watch complication. https://www.iphonelife.com/content/25-best-apple-watch-complications

@futurebird @llewelly OMG! This s is great! The one with 12 at the top and 0 at the bottom is perfect for demonstrating the connection between time and astronomy! I wish someone would make an Apple Watch face like this.

@jessamyn @paulc Listen when I was just a wee girl making technology *smaller* was how you impressed people. No one wanted a bigger walkman or a huge camera. Smaller was sleeker. Smaller was high tech.To me a big phone is just ... going backwards.

@futurebird @jessamyn some of the bigness is style. But a lot of it is screen size and battery life. I agree, smaller is harder. Reminds me of a SNL fake add for and iPod so small that you would always lose it. At least my speakers are smaller than the ones I bought in college.

@futurebird @jessamyn @paulc So much this. Why can't i get a phone that fits comfortably in a shirt pocket AND does the stuff a modern phone does.

@futurebird @jessamyn @paulc A colleague calls these big phones "the large print edition", and maybe that's the appeal: larger, more readable text. They still don't fit in my pocket, though.

@futurebird in theory, I do, but it’s a mechanical job with a cracked back glass and I really need to get around to getting it serviced, but I never quite do

@futurebird Not for many years, but when I'm demonstrating games at a convention I like to be able to check the time without hailing out a phone etc. Citizen Eco-Drive, low-power electric + solar panel. I'd love a very very very open platform smart watch and some day I'll do the research to find one.

@futurebird I was one of those nerds a few decades ago who wore a pocket watch rather than a wrist watch. After one too many pocket watch disasters involving a watch chain and a door knob, I gave up on that and went watchless. For a lot of years,Been wearing an Apple Watch for the past year and a half, because I am old and watches do health things these days. I rarely check it to find out what the actual time might be.

@futurebird My smart watch is the easiest way I've found to geotag my camera photos (using Garmin Basecamp), it provides useful alarms (helpful for Pomodoro technique at work), record my exercise (so I can make sure I do enough) ... it's more a sci-fi computer that can tell time rather than a watch.
