Imagine how ridiculous it would be to write a DOS program that PRINTS, in 2024?No OS drivers! You have to program in support for every printer separately.I'm tempted

@foone I wonder just how many actually support PCL3 and you can just use that. For the longest time it was almost universal, I mean--- the go-to for a universal printer driver was just to tell your OS/application it's a Laserjet 4 in PCL personalityA bunch of inkjets also did ESC/P2Really this kinda just all continued right up until Canon figured out they could save two cents per printer by making the Windows GDI output a raster image and clock it out the parallel port

@foone that brings back memories. I made a fair bit of coin (well, teenager coin) in the mid-80's writing the crappy printer drivers WordPerfect needed.

@foone Is all modern hardware still addressable from real mode? I would imagine that a lot of stuff needs memory mappings that are completely out of range.

@foone I once had to get an old hospital inventory system to work on Windows 7 that was hard-coded to print to LPT1.It wasn't terribly hard, but felt like a dumb problem to have.

@foone i would almost think it would be easier as most modern printers all you have to do is open a connection and stream either a postscript or PCL file and for most thats all that's needed, I know all of my brother printers are like that., even my label printer is basically just a usb serial device that takes formatted strings, lol.

@foone ofcourse you would only write to a dotmatrix printer. Like the Epson LX80 I had in my room in the good old days. Printed out something like 40-50 pages. Got tired of the noise and turned up the Metal music to 11 until our neighbour pounded his fist in the wall 😄😄

@foone I imagine the real problem today isn't so much supporting the printer itself, but probably printer manufacturers likely have a lot of stuff to try to lock people out from accessing the hardware directly...

@foone Via a LPT1 parallel port cable, or by implementing a USB printer driver? You could also write a driver that hijacks LPT's device driver entry and prints to a CUPS server over the network; either controlled via a .com (if you can make it fit) or, if you're feeling especially masochistic^Wnostalgic, a TSR.(TSR doesn't fit? Swap everything out to EMS/XMS! ... Excuse me, I'm getting flashbacks to my teenager years. And not the good kind.)

@foone hopefully on a matrix printer. I still have one for my Atari ST, yet unsure if the color cartridge is still working. Hmmm 🤔

@fooneA number of modern printers usually do PCL5, PCL6 and/or PostScript. I darkly recall that Ghostscript might have had a DOS port. There are also exotic things out there ... like printers using Windows' GDI or fancy languages... Have fun!
