Really love how GNOME Settings links to this excellent page on Mozilla’s privacy policy for location data.#GNOME #Mozilla #location #data #privacy

@joepie91 Ah, would you look at that, it is. And GNOME is – surprise, surprise – considering Google instead:https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/geoclue/geoclue/-/issues/186

Ah, this is because Mozilla Location Services is dead (I guess it wasn’t AI enough). And now GNOME are considering Google – because, why not? Nothing wrong with Google, amirite?https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/113198524101269641

@vladimir_lu Off the top of my head: (a) Weather (b) Auto time-zone (c) auto light/dark mode based on sunrise/sunset.

@aral @vladimir_lu Literally the only reason I need location is when I'm specifically using an automatic map/GPS system while driving. Everything else can be done with a postal code or town name, which does give a general area, but at least it's not more precise than that.

@aral You seem to be a bit harsh here. What could Mozilla have done to not be sued by what seems to be a patent troll? And what alternative location service should Gnome rather move to? I hate Google, but AFAIK there are no real alternative. Have I missed any? Personally I think they should probably rather not have a location service at all rather than use Google, but I can understand that some might think it's necessary to support it.

@forteller @codeinabox @beacondb @mozilla Mozilla couldn’t care less about using Google’s services. They’ve said so enough times themselves over the years. Oh, and they only exist because Google pays them half a billion dollars a year to be allowed to spy on their users unu default.

@aral @codeinabox @beacondb @mozilla Would the world be a better place if they stopped taking the money and shut down? And to go back to the original point: What is their real alternative to using Google location services?

@forteller @codeinabox @beacondb @mozilla Nah, the world would be a better place if people actually were what they told you they were.
