@coolboymew I don’t know if you know the 4chan meme about the year of Linux desktop. It’s over 10 years long. When someone wants to troll they make a post about if it’s the year of the Linux desktop. Anyways linux is awesome

@Diceyocean It will never be the year of the "Linux desktop", as Linux is only a kernel and doesn't operate on its own.The year of the GNU/Linux desktop was in 1995 or so, as you could finally use a recent computer in freedom again.

@Diceyocean Clearly the ç¿ æ˜ŸçŸ³ poster from the software freedom instance is being serious and handcrafts posts rather than pastes copypasta.GNU has been in development ever since 1984 and around 1990 the last necessary piece was a kernel, so GNU developers started to develop a kernel in 1990.Linus came around in 1991, got sick of MINIX and saw that all GNU needed was a kernel, so he released a quick and dirty monolithic kernel as proprietary software (at first it didn't get anywhere as GNU developers weren't interested). Then in 1992, Linus decided to release Linux as free software under the GPLv2-only and GNU developers determined that such kernel was now usable in the free world and ported glibc and many other GNU libraries to work with Linux, to allow for usable, fully free system - GNU/Linux.After several years of development, in 1995 or so, such OS has largely improved and worked for general usage, with a user being able to run an installer for a GNU/Linux distro like Debian (originally sponsored by GNU) and receiving a operating fully free OS.Alas, in 1996, proprietary programs started to be added to Linux, disguised as arrays of numbers, as many of Linux's developers failed to see that the very reason for GNU/Linux to exist is for it to be fully free and such proprietary perversion is the antithesis of the OS.Such proprietary programs are added for reasons of popularity - if garbage Wi-Fi cards which refuse to operate without a proprietary program loaded at runtime operate out of the box, that is attractive for many users, who otherwise can't be bothered to use 1000BASE-T instead, get a decent Wi-Fi card (usb or PCI-e) or write free replacement software for such Wi-Fi cards.Although such acts increase the popularity of the GNU/Linux distros - that is like driving GNU/Car towards hell because the road is faster, rather than driving the GNU/Car in the right direction, just because driving the GNU/Car in the right direction is a little bit slower and less popular. Many distros have fallen for the proprietary trap and this recently has included Debian, which previously did a pretty good job at respecting the users freedom by default, but providing "non official" proprietary programs (a flaw, rather than a boon), but now only offers an installer chock full of proprietary software and that also installs a bunch of proprietary software without even asking the user.Of course, GNU maintains a wholly free version of Linux (https://www.gnu.org/software/linux-libre/) as well as a list of free distros; https://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.en.htmlTLDR; The kernel, Linux alone is useless - you also need a init, which launches any daemons the system needs, as well as a getty (so the user can login via fbcon and launch GNU bash), or a display manager (so the user can login via a GUI), which in turn launches a window manager (Xorg or wayland), which launches a Desktop Environment (xfce4, i3, Mate, KDE, gnome, sway etc) and in which the user launches the software they wish to use (for some GNU/users, the main program they run is GNU Emacs).Linux's developers admit that their kernel is useless without all that other software, by making it shut down if it can't find an init; https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/init/main.c#n1525Linux functions like a transmission in a car - it allocates the machines resources and provides drivers to allow interfacing with hardware, but the user doesn't interface with it directly as it has no visible interface - usually software only interfaces with Linux via glibc, which handles C functions and makes Linux SYSCALLs when necessary - as a result, most software doesn't care about what kernel you use and only cares about being linked to a libc - which means many programs function identically whether you run them on GNU/Linux or GNU/Hurd.The kernel isn't even the first part of the system - that would be the BIOS and of course GNU provides a free BIOS; https://www.gnu.org/software/gnuboot/Outside of the BIOS, you also need a bootloader to load the kernel and of course GNU provides a free bootloader; https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/A common mistaken belief is that GNU is just the coreutils, but despite how GNU coreutils is the best coreutils (BusyBox and toybox suck), that is only one GNU package out of 387: https://www.gnu.org/software/Of course many Linux developers are glad to take credit for many things they don't do, or even provide, usually for GNU, but often also other software. Many people view themselves as "Linux users", but this is always either due to a lack of knowledge about where the system came from and how it operates or due to a hate for freedom.https://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-users-never-heard-of-gnu.htmlhttps://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.htmlhttps://www.gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.htmlAs for the copypasta; https://www.gnu.org/gnu/incorrect-quotation.html

@coolboymew@shitposter.world Based. Valve's "fine, we'll do it ourselves" attitude has just been awesome, so far.
