idk. the tech job market is generally pretty fucked rn. where are the jobs that benefit normal people. my friend who works on a farm doesn't need to battle with the idea of his field funding mass surveillance. he goes out, picks vegetables all summer, and sells them to the local farm. everyone around here benefits from his work in a pretty direct way.my options as someone versed in tech feel super limited in this sense. if i want to actively harm the world, i can work for a military contractor or in surveillance. or both. if i want to at least keep the status quo, which isn't really much better, i can sell my soul to insurance companies, banks, or someone in a financial sector. but those people aren't helping anyone in local communities.what do i do. where are the jobs that benefit society. why did we as a society decide that technology should be used as a tool to do widespread harm. i don't want to do that.

sorry im getting really tired and just have no idea what to do with my life at this point. i really need some sort of job because i'm basically relying on family to keep me afloat at this point, and they're not really able in any position to continue doing that. but there are very few things that feel worth it to me.

@wizard One time I applied to a children's hospital. It was a remote software position. I had no qualifications in healthcare, and very nearly got the job.I think that field is pretty good in regards to helping people directly. I won't say it's perfect, but I daresay no place is, unless you're willing to eschew much of modern society, as most of it is entangled in the questionable moral decisions of others. We are all participants, yet in my opinion none of us are complicit if we're just trying to get by in life. There's plenty of work that doesn't directly involve evil. Just a question of how close to it you're comfortable being. That's something you'll have to get used to, no matter where or when you are.

@wizard I work at event livestreaming backend company. I guess our products and my work in them reduces need to travel to go watch sports or corporate events.

@wizard but insurance companies and banks are core parts of "financial system", we all as society depend of financial system. So it's something needed in society despite they don't help people in a more altruistic way. I believe the issue would be the cases where the people gets ruined directly due those institutions. What those institutions should do is educating population, for avoiding to make decisions that could slaver themselves.

@wizard tell me frankly your point of view, my point of view is that institutions are not intrinsically evil despite they work like a mechanism, but what be should be done is empowering people, remember them they have the power

@wizard while i'm still finding my own answer to this question, atm i have a job that at least doesn't conflict too much with my values, while the pay is good enough that i was able to start working 4/5th. the latter gives me the time, headspace and energy to work on projects i consider more meaningfull.

@wizard don't forget the fossil fuels and fintech companies. Lots of world-destroying work there too!I think you're touching on one of the Big Problems with capitalism, rather than tech specifically: most of the paid work is Bad For The World. I have a theory that this is a big driver behind Free software: use your skills for Good... in your free time.

@wizard I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of advice for you, other than that there are not-evil jobs out there... they just don't pay (nearly) as well as EvilCorp™, or don't offer full time, or only do contact work, etc.I'm making £90k right now writing anti-Cancer tech, but could be making £150 with oil & gas. It took me a year to find this job, but my mental health was worth it.

@wizard idk, maybe the west has this problem, because i'm working at the website that helps people see all used car ads in Ukraine from a lot of websites/social networks/etc, car dealers are happy, people who wants to buy a car also happy and i can name other good products that are developed in Ukraine or nearby (except east such as Russia)

@wizard For years tech people (myself included) were switching jobs for bigger bucks, overheating the market. I blame no one, people are people, but now we're here. Some companies do good stuff, but their offers are usually very modest in comparison with ugly big tech.
