@futzle I'm an embedded linux engineer mostly working with industrial hardware, I debugged so many weird edge cases that I do have actual proof that our hardware behaves differently depending on environment and people. I measured the timing difference that lead to a race condition one co-worker would regularly hit, but nobody else could reproduce.

@datacop@literatur.social @futzle@old.mermaid.town having dealt with hundreds of the exact same systems being used by hundreds of individuals at places like schools, hospitals, and call centers ... can confirm. it's the person, not the machine. i blame the unique electromagnetic & gravitational fields that each person has. you either make good connection with the machine's spirit, or you don't.

@purple @datacop @futzle my sister and electronics get along so poorly that the only vehicles that work reliably around her have carburetors

@futzle "Yes, that's patently absurd."

@futzle I have a friend who used to have this aura where hardware would just break down near him. Harddrives would fail if he plugged in the power to the desktop. Boot would fail if he pressed the power button.I don't know if the aura wore off or if computers just became more reliable by the later 90s compared to the earlier 90s, but he doesn't have this anymore.I'm the opposite. People will tell me something is not working, I repeat the exact steps they tell me, and it works. I have the wizard's touch.

@futzle I believe that computers hate all people equally but that doesn't seem to be an option

@futzle Yes, that explains why I am the only one to ever find the "bug" that got by all the Alpha and Beta testing, and the release of the software.It never fails. I touch it and I get a new "never seen before" error/crash.🤖

@futzle When in the Air Force the lab supervisor realized that everything I touched went to shit… so, they put me in charge of QA.We had one of the lowest failure rates in the service that year.—When working at a nuclear weapons plant and the team wanted to work overtime… they would take me with them. Because, if something is broke… you stay until it is fixed.—I don’t break the stuff… but if it is flaky, it’ll show its true colors if I am present.

@futzle I've certainly seen someone apparently doing, "just the right thing" only to have me grab the computer, and go... "yeah, works for me..." And vice versa... I've found *plenty* of bugs which the good developers have gone, "man that's a new one on me, let's track it down..."

@futzle Literally today:me: [discussing laptop A/V product freaking out] ...also also the automatic update service is sitting in “Preparing macOS Sonoma 14.7…” and driving additional CPU spikes. So maybe a good day to do that offline reading you’ve been meaning to get to?co-worker: Haha that's the problem that I had where IT had re-install MacOS (they gave me a new laptop instead as I was close enough to the refresh time). Tried installing the OS update like 20 different times and it kept getting stuck thereme:I knew I shouldn't have walked back to my desk with you after that meeting

@futzle I always find it confusing/disconcerting when the results are not adding up to 100%
