A friend of mine asked "How do you deal with this?" to which I replied that I dealt with it almost 2 years ago when I deleted my account. Why people remain on Twitter, I do not know.https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/23/24252438/x-blocked-users-view-public-posts

@simplenomad in fairness a lot of big orgs, govs and emergency services use Twitter to announce things, witness Biden stepping out of the presidential race… the reality is normal people won’t go to places like mastodon because most of what they follow isn’t here, and those orgs won’t come here without the users being here. Chicken say hello to egg.

@simplenomad Engagement, and seeking opinions outside of the echo chamber. The nature of mastodon breeds echo chambers.

@kurtseifried I do agree with what you're saying and understand it - here though I was kind of preaching (bitching) to the choir. I mean if you read this type of thing on Mastodon *and* still have a Twitter account, I don't fully understand what's stopping you. Particularly if you follow crazy left-leaning old hippies such as myself.

@mart_brooks I do get it. However depending on who you follow on any social media platform, echo chambers form. I just couldn't stand what was happening and had to leave.

BTW in case anyone asks, I did in fact delete my account on Twitter and yes not a week or so later someone else created a new account with my old account name.

@simplenomad Entirely your prerogative and right, I would never be so stupid as to suggest otherwise.I like running my ideas and opinions up against an open audience to test them. I've been proved to be wrong several times.

@Polychrome Yeah I made a list of those types before I left and found their other socials, especially blog posts with rss feeds I could subscribe to. Still, there were casualties....

@mart_brooks Haha that is the thing I do miss about that place - the absolute strange stuff that would come out of the woodwork with such weird perspectives.

@simplenomad I don't understand it.Twitter/Birdsite/X/whatevertheheck if someone blocked you (unless they were private) you could always just log out and view their timeline anyway.Which is to say: they never had implemented anything as remedial as message privacy in the first place; only the illusion of such things. If fElon Musk thinks that unwinding that broken "feature" is moving the sunken ship forward, I guess it's just more evidence that no one should ever trust billionaires to have a clue about anything. But hey, he paid for the piece of it.sh he can do whatever he wants to it I guess?

@simplenomad This is why I didn't delete mine, but instead locked it and put up a pinned post about leaving on account of the place being a nazi bar.

@simplenomad in fairness I disabled my account instead of deleting it so nobody can squat my name. Also I still need to login to read the occasional thread (eg @thegrugq links from his newsletter). I think we underestimate the human ability to be boiled alive and putting up with abuse. Even when there’s a better alternative a lot of people’s ego won’t let them switch and admit they should have left ages ago.

@simplenomad It's certainly much easier to get into a good argument there than here. I've actually really only had one falling out here, and that was with an actual lawyer - Hi Neil!

@simplenomad same here, I enjoyed Twitter but I left X as soon as it became a right wing toxic cesspit under Musk’s ownership. It’s simply unfathomable why people stay on that platform
