@esther what I wish people would recognize about fedi is that tagging is where the real trouble starts. where moderation becomes necessary. because we don't have algos, if you're not tagging people or spamming hashtags or intentionally looking outside your home timeline, people don't see it. so rude etc posts are less of a problem than somebody replying to that poster saying be nice. we should be able to tolerate a much wider range of views here because of that feature than anywhere else.

@esther I've long thought that so much effort is put into making instance block lists, but so little is put into anything focused on problem users, and it kind of exemplifies the general moderation problems on here You're unlikely to defederate a place just because of a few reply guys even if they fail to moderate them, so everyone has to rediscover the same guys the hard way.

@esther FWIW, a bunch of British TERFs joined Bluesky a week or two ago and tried to tone police their way into acceptance.They were immediately and relentlessly dragged by nearly every single user on Bluesky before being bodily ejected straight into the sun.Tolerating bullshit-spewing bigots and sheltering them through pedantic calls for civility is a choice.

@esther you are contradicting yourself. On the one hand you wish for more pushback, on the other, when people pushback against you, you complain they are policing you.Seems to me you only want your own "pushback" to be heard.What I like in here is that everyone can create thier own feed. Want people with other opinions? Follow them. Dont want to hear from some people? Block them.

@esther @stefan I‘ve been practicing and teaching Non Violent Communication for over 15 years and it saddens me that you only encountered people who use it as a weapon playing language police. I see NVC as an excellent tool to foster empathy, compassion and connection. Thank you for your toot! I like how succinctly it summarizes how NVC can be misused. May I quote it in my trainings?
