Some of the parents were on the verge of making going to the school dances *mandatory* and student government with my help put a stop to that. Some parents are like... disappointed their teens are too isolated I guess? I can see why they feel that way. Anyway I'm feeling vindicated because the student government came up with some ideas to make the dances more appealing: one was having a "chill lounge" a more quiet place with tea and snacks and boardgames. It was a big hit! Pass it along.

The kind of high school dances I endured one of in 90s in Ohio were nightmares. One loud gym with MC Hammer playing (all the swears creatively scratched out) so loud my ears ring to this very day... endless awkwardness. Thinking everyone is judging you (but they aren't it's too dark and loud)I assumed it was supposed to be fun and since it was horrible I was bad it whatever it was.

@futurebird I was lucky. My senior prom was horrible, but then we realized that the freshman dorms from the university I would be attending four months later were having a dance in another area of the same hotel, so my date and I went over there and had a great time.

@futurebird that's such a good idea. I recall my college dance being loud too, and the sensory overload is a bit much. I was saved by the fact the place had a porch to get fresh air.

@futurebird Betcha it takes less than two minutes for the popular kids to come up with a snotty derogatory term for the kids who retreat to the "chill lounge." At least, they certainly would have in my high school days if anyone had tried to set up something like that. Maybe high school is less of a jungle now, but I doubt it.

@jonberger Some schools are. Some are not. We try not to be like that. I'm certain I miss some of the snubbing and nastiness, but it's a lot better than some other places I've seen. Adults have to put effort in to making that happen.

@futurebird@jonbergerAt my kid's school the students have organized a D&D club with so many participants they can hardly all play at once. A friend works at another school where she teaches a boardgame class as an elective. Good raves always have a cool down room. I think the chill lounge would probably be more or at least as popular as the dance.Honestly, organizing a big boardgame night with tons of new games to try out might be a better school activity than a dance!

@futurebird @jonberger In my experience of the latest generations, the Popular Kids never change; however, they have a LOT less lock on actual popularity. The kids they'll never accept have way more positive options to just chill with each other and not worry about that set.

@futurebird @notsoloud @clew I know I'm doing an "aktually" moment and everyone's going to get mad at me, but the game Snake predates Nokia phones by something like two decades. (I first played it as Nibbles in QBasic, but I know it even predates that significantly.)Line up with the torches if you will, but I just feel like it's sort of unfair to the original creators and all those who added unique features since to credit Nokia.

@futurebird I wish my school did that when I was a kid! Tea, boardgames, and some chill social time would have been fun! Loud-yet-censored pop music in not exactly dark spaces with hovering adults making sure we leave some room for Jesus isn't terribly inclusive.

@futurebird Fortunately when I left highschool in 83 we didn't have "social" garbage. The last 3 days at the end of term were usually a waste of everybody's time with "entertainment" that bored me to death. I can only laugh at people playing Bingo once. Being made to play it was Hell on earth.

@futurebird oh this was a nice twist !! “came up with some ideas“ —- that’s very cool.If two sides are entrenched in a position it’s very hard for *any* creative ideas to flow, let alone be accepted. (When we need creativity the most, we are least likely to find it!)This was mucho awesome, because the creative solution sounds far better than any previous typical dance.

@futurebird Thank you for your service. The eighth grade dance my parents forced me to go to was literally the worst night of the worst year of my life.I refused to talk to my parents for days afterward. It was the only way I could think of to communicate to them how terrible it had been.Sometimes the kids _are_ judging you. I was dropped off by my parents in slacks and a Members Only jacket; other kids showed up in limousines wearing tuxedos and prom dresses.
