I have a strong opinion that this was peak urbanism. Quick and efficient method to build millions of flats for a country that was in dire needs of more means of accommodation. And together with flats, there were the public services, the schools, the kindergartens, health and cultural institutions. Neighborhoods with wide green spaces and good public transport to connect them.Building of the Piątkowo district in Poznań, Poland, 80s.Source: https://www.facebook.com/starypoznan/posts/pfbid02Rm749nwQ8Z4y2KN6ymZqCjVPzaan72xHefRUcif6QeGbFhUC2qEzCVxqNbwTEf78l

@stfn completely agreed, they look good even now, they were built for people, not profits.

@podryban my words exactly! I miss stuff being built to be good and serve well, instead of just being profitable.

@stfn as for planing - sure, having a whole neighbour planned is the best thing that can happen. But the materials used could be better, as noise isolation isn't to good.

@stfn These neighbourhoods were planned for actual living measured in decades and generations, not for a short-term developer's profit. And yes, I've spent most of my life in such blocks.

@stfn lived in one of those half my life, entire ground floor was local amenities - dentist, hairdresser, small grocer etc. High-rise next door had a GP which ours lacked. We had shared green space with diverse playgrounds qnd lush forest next to it, used to run communal LAN cables between highrises in the area.. and a whole slew of local kids used to hand out all around it.Good times.By comparison UK sprawl is overpriced cardboard houses far away from any amenities barely staying afloat =/

@stfn @podryban if they all had underground parking spaces, they would be still great and solve a couple of problems current cities have, just think of it - so much underground space... 🤯
