"But the Fediverse is also frequently defined without centering protocols – especially since it's always been multiple-protocol."Jonhttps://privacy.thenexus.today/is-bluesky-part-of-todays-fediverse/This is contradicted by the first source referenced, the 2017 WeDistribute article by @deadsuperhero. Which makes it clear that "fediverse" was coined to describe the network using one protocol; OStatus. But it's true that once Mastodon led the charge on implementing AP, it became multi-protocol, and protocols aren't really the point.

Speaking of which;"Mastodon's adoption, non-standard extensions to, and then abandonment of the old OStatus protocol as a classic embrace, extend, and extinguish maneuver."Jonhttps://privacy.thenexus.today/is-bluesky-part-of-todays-fediverse/Describing the way the Mastodon team dealt with the limitations of OStatus as "embrace, extend, and extinguish" is ahistorical nonsense, and highly unfair to everyone involved.(1/?)#fediverse #Mastodon

Yes, Gargron did some dopey things early on, in his attempts to shoehorn features into Mastodon that weren't really possibly with OStatus. The classic was introducing Direct messages without any consultation with other fediverse devs, resulting in non-Mastodon having no way of knowing weren't public 🤦♂️But Mastodon continued to federate over OStatus long after the ActivityPub spec was published, to give other projects time to finish their implementations.(2/?)

Many of the legacy projects that started federating over OStatus ran into its limitations. There was an obvious need for a more elaborate protocol and a broad consensus on making it a formal standard. Which is why most projects fed into the W3C working group that gave us ActivityPub.I can't understand why anyone would present this as a underhanded Mastodon takeover. If anyone was pushing Mastodon at the expense of the rest of the fediverse, it was the SillyCon Valley business press.(3/3)

Oh and while I'm pointing out #fediverse-related nonsense;"'The Fediverse', as an ideoform, has become tainted by extremism because extremists do use the software and protocols that it comprises."https://nora.codes/post/the-fediverse-is-already-dead/?ref=privacy.thenexus.todayYes, there are white supremacists who use the fediverse. Just like they use email, and the web, and BitTorrent, and the net in general. And the telephone network. And the postal system. The point this cyber-puritanism misses is that this is the nature of common carriers.

One more, here's one of those blog posts where fedizens bemoans the mainstreaming of the cozy little network they knew and loved, sure that nothing will ever be the same;https://medium.com/@alliethehart/gameingers-are-dead-and-so-is-mastodon-705b535ed616You're expect it's from a couple of years ago, after the post-Musk exodus from Titter, right? Nope. It's from 2017.This wailing and gashing of teeth happens every time the #fediverse gets a significant bump in numbers. Yet by the time of the next big bump, everything before *that* was the Golden Age.

@strypey "the fediverse is dead because there are people on it I don't want to talk to" is certainly a kind of reasoning

@deadsuperhero> Friendica was still in the space, and had its own protocol in addition to OStatusRight, but AFAIK Friendica is the only app that ever implemented DFRN. Which is why I don't count it as a fediverse protocol, and probably why you didn't bother mentioning.
