I bought new trousers over the summer, and even after going down a size they are larger than pairs from the same brand that are three years old. I have “good” coats that are twenty years old, the labels say they’re four sizes bigger than I currently wear but they fit me perfectly.

People are surprised I learned linux at 15 because I wanted to rice and make my desktop kawaii, but that's exactly what I did. And then you have Inferno and it's like running a (faster) JVM, but where the JVM includes JWT and that has a file manager widget, Inferno draws a window and puts a shell in it and cp and mv and ls and stuff, so there's the Unix idioms instead of the Windows idioms. You think about it as a component of the system and it's less of a big deal.KVM is much more lightweight than the JVM. So you can run a little Plan 9 VM, drawterm into it, and it's another interface into the system.

There is a busted Thinkpad (no disk, no battery, no screen) that PXE-boots; it gets a Plan 9 kernel from the DHCP server (which is Linux) and then acts as a CPU server while talking to a fileserver on a VM. That thing boots a Plan 9 kernel but is dependent on a fileserver that lives on a VM, but that fileserver runs fossil and that fossil is backed by venti running on Linux. I was running Postgres and venti on the host, and then I had a VM that ran FSE and it had Slackware on it and that VM would talk to the Postgres and venti servers running on the host system but Pleroma and Redis lived inside the VM: was I running FSE on Slackware or CRUX? It's not a meaningful question.Anyway, I have put 9front onto my (working) Thinkpad, and that probably qualifies as running it on "bare metal" because that machine is (because it's a laptop) relatively self-contained, but I usually use my DevTerm and the DevTerm has qemu on it and can boot a Plan 9 VM but the 99% case for that machine is that I use drawterm to get to the two main CPU servers and I use ssh to get to the Linux machines.One of the very cool parts about Plan 9 is that it decomposes the system into different parts, that's kind of the point of the filesystem-as-interface idiom. So you make all of this stuff network-transparent and then it doesn't matter where or who or how. You get kind of a crude version of that under Linux, with ssh and remote fileserver protocols, but you don't have something like sshnet, you don't have something like drawterm.drawterm is usually described as "graphical ssh" but what it *actually* does is implement /dev/screen (and the keyboard and mouse and whatnot) as a fileserver, then auth against a Plan 9 machine, then bind the /dev/screen and the Plan 9 machine doesn't know that /dev/screen represents a window rather than a VGA device and it doesn't have to. This is really cool. You get an exponential effect from it when you realize how the #C device fits in and how to get to other Linux machines using the Plan 9 system as a hub. You can just interactively and casually construct a pipeline in your shell that crosses a large number of machines in a way that is completely transparent to your shell script. So Plan 9 is to the network what Unix was to a single system, you know? Pipes are a big deal, not just in terms of writing software but as a notation for thinking about CSP, and Plan 9 does that to the network: what do I care which OS is on which node if I am using a system that makes that irrelevant?

So the Linux conference is selling shirts that are way larger in 2008 than they were in 1999, it's probably because the demographic skewed older.(I am actually losing weight.
