Do you identify as “queer”?(poll not anonymous to instance admins)

I am just curious to know and understand my following — the disclaimer is still important: if you don't trust me or the admin of your instance and are worried about this information of you, do not answer this poll. I learned my lesson when I asked people what party they vote for. Sadly, across the Fediverse, this information is not anonymous. However, it would be a ton of effort to look through the database / logs to see who voted how here. I am not interested in that :]

Additionally, I'd be happy to receive a comment on this to explain your answer further! If you do not think the term “queer” fits, what does fit (or maybe why does “queer” not fit well)? I'm just personally interested. You need to imagine, I just came out last year :bisper: , and although I am very progressive, it's all just facts, understanding, stories and beliefs I've learned or furthered since last year. I wish to understand the people around me more, which is why I ask this. You're all great people and I am happy that the fediverse is the way it is :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

@ErikUden gay or lesbian would be the word I'd use.I'm female but see "gay" as the universal word for us in samesex-relationships even though it is mostly used to describe Male-Male-relationships. Queer is ... a weird word to me, personally I'd not use it to describe anyone. If someone is bi I just use bi, if someone is lesbian or gay I use that.

@ErikUden yes, I use and like it. It's blanket, so I don't have to fill up a shopping cart with all the labels that apply to my feelings about sex, romance, and gender all at once. I can just drop this term as catchall and not have to carefully define myself

@ErikUden Somehow, I don't feel any of those applies to me. 🤔It's hard to find words, but I'll give it a try. I am what I am (which probably is in the queer spectrum), but I don't feel the need to identify as such. Not because I was afraid or something, I don't just feel the need to identify as ... whatever. Not sure if that makes sense, especially as a response to the poll. 😅

@digitalrodent I so fully understand it whilst not feeling it at all. The term was always used positively and worn with pride for my time. I wonder what words we will have reclaimed or lost in the future...

@ErikUden I also don't understand this term much, but I've been focusing on understanding my sexuality, because at first I understood myself as demisexual, however, what I see about it ends up going the opposite of what I understand about... But recognizing yourself rediscovers yourself :)

@ErikUden Don't know about you guys, but in my vocabulary "queer" is not necessarily something you can "identify" as, but just an umbrella term for everything outside the "traditional norm" - basically I use it instead of all those confusing letters in "LGBTQLOMNOPWHATEVER+" abbreviation, which of course itself contains Q for "queer" and it makes it even more confusing :)

@ErikUden It's been very useful as an umbrella term to refer to my friends and I.It's very affirming in the sense of "we may not know what we have been, what we are now, or what we will be, but we find ourselves making connections in LGBTQ+ spaces understanding that we are not cis/het." I don't always remember how aquaintances identify, or if their understanding of themselves has changed recently, so to save myself the trouble of rattling off LGBTQ+, queer becomes a nice shorthand. Calling someone LGBTQ+ seems more prescriptive while queer seems more descriptive. Like, my impression is that if someone says "you're LGBTQ+" it could be construed as "oh you ARE this thing, in that it's your being wholly and fully" (which may not be true for people who don't feel represented by any part of the LGBTQ+ moniker, feel the acronym is bad practice, etc) vs queer which is like "this thing is part of what makes you who you are, and we don't really have to know what that for you to still find acceptance here."

@ErikUden I don't even know how to answer. I'm cis, I'm hetero, so a lot of kids these days say I'm not a part of "the community" and my feelings don't count. But all my life I've been mistaken for "some kinda queer" and I've paid for it, and all my life "the LGBT community" has been where the bullies put me and where my friends found me.Kids say they're "reclaiming" the slur, but it still tastes like blood to me. And I don't like how those kids treat other people who don't like the taste.

@ErikUden Queer is a good umbrella term for the community as a whole, to avoid the alphabet soup. It's also the best thing to describe a lot of us, because it doesn't get into nor imply specifics, and doesn't require a lengthy explanation.I could say, "I'm enby and attracted to multiple genders and physical configurations, but I neither identify with nor am I attracted to stereotypical gender presentations or heterosexuality." Or I could say, "I'm queer." Easy peasy.
