I spent 5 minutes using the terrible makeagif.com interface (because I don't have video editing software on my phone!) and at the end of the process it gives me an mp4.THAT'S NOT A GIF. CHANGE YOUR NAME.

Admittedly I've been maintaining a python script for years with the sole purpose of converting video files into GIFs.But that's because I'm weird! What about everyone else who tries to use this misleading website?

@foone I, too, want actual GIFs. Right now, I want an 88x31 format of Bad Apple!!, with I guess a visualizer to the right

@foone I believe somewhere along the way the GIF became aspirational as an art form of looping video. Under this newer definition, any video format seems to qualify.Since I know GIF as a file format with 8-bit palletized color, that may be animated, normally no faster than 15FPS to save file size, with no audio, and delicious hacky techniques like only partial updates and transparency, I find the newer definition removes the charm of the limitations of the format.

@foone my tip for animated GIFs: if you're stuck in front of a corporate computer with MS Office on, PowerPoint now includes an export to GIF feature. This exports your whole PowerPoint deck as a single GIF, including any embedded videos or moving items. In effect PowerPoint has now video editing somewhere for GIF creation!

@foone ffmpeg is a bit fiddly but that's what I normally use. At least it creates actual gifs.

@mcgrew that's what I use! my script just wraps it so you can get images that are under the size limit of a given site.
