In today's edition of discovering the USA is weird, I learnt your minimum PTO/annual leave is 0 days and it's considered a benefit when a company provides it

@BrodieOnLinux I feel like this is less weird than healthcare being a benefit of employment. But yes, it's weird here.

@BrodieOnLinux Yup, most jobs give you nothing for at least the first year. It's "normal" here.

@zak The stack reasons why the USA is a weird country has plenty of room left on it

@BrodieOnLinux The only legal guaranteed pto is if you get selected for jury duty or parental leave. Special cases, no regular PTO is guaranteed. It is provided to keep employees.

@BrodieOnLinux there isn’t any law requiring paid time off, but I’ve never met anyone with a full time job that didn’t get at least two weeks of paid time off each year.

@BrodieOnLinux @eliteamdgamer @keyboardg fun fact that the numbers most states use for cover jury duty pay base their numbers off when that law was first passed. I was paid $22 for two weeks of jury time when I served jury duty.

@BrodieOnLinux @eliteamdgamer in NJ you get paid $5 per day. You have to get your self there which will cost more in just gas.

@BrodieOnLinux Not just that but even at companies that provide it there is often a cultural expectation that you don't use it. It makes the USA's yellow peril very confusing to me, since the justification for protection is often "we can't work like they do in Japan/Korea/China!" But are we really that different?

@BrodieOnLinux that GDP/capita is not coming from nothing though. They also don't have to worry about burnout because they just import new people.

@BrodieOnLinux Crazy isn't it. Fortunately for the Americans at our company, the same vacation policy has been applied that the UK staff get. Unlimited (subject to fair use). What they don't get though is the same workers rights for things like redundancy and what not. America is like the wild west it seems.

@BrodieOnLinux @keyboardg my favourite way of looking at it as you’re a successful plastic surgeon. You make about 1-2 million or so a year. Then you have to go serve jury duty with commoners lol. it’s a bizarre reality check.

@BrodieOnLinux Every time I am disappointed in my country because it's full of Nazis and systematically dismantels the social system and worker rights for over 20 years I think of the richest country in the world and feel a tiny bit better!
