This video is remarkable. It's so easy to second-guess the choices of parents with perfect hindsight and limited information. But, I can't help but sense a rejection of help for this young man. A rejection of what's "for snowflakes" -- not a therapist, not discussing feelings. He bought his son an AR. Children try to be who we tell them to be. They try SO HARD. Who are you telling your chid to be when you buy them a weapon of war?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dECT_Ut11VQ

I've said this before but there is nothing normal about bullying. Nothing normal or acceptable about a child being bullied, or being a bully. (sometimes I've found the child who is described as "bullied" is, in fact, a bully themselves... bullies can be very socially isolated)I've had tough guy parents roll their eyes about my concern for the social well being of my students thinking I'm being unreasonable in expecting a school to be a SAFE SPACE.

I'm still mad that some think "safe space" is a concept worthy of mocking. Not being able to make your spaces safe is just a sign of disorganization, not enough resources and carelessness. It's not "tough" ... everyone *needs* to feel safe. It's a basic human need. How is this something we have to explain?

@futurebird I like to ask the people who think safe spaces are for the weak if they would like to have some incoming mortar rounds.Turns out we all want to be safe from scary things which can hurt us.

@futurebird if safe space wasn't a good thing we would never have invented the concept of shelter

@futurebird How many cries for help does a child have to make? What do you want to bet that instead of a conversation, instead of trying to get to the bottom of what's going on, the minute those cops left, his dad gave him a beating and considered the matter closed?

@artemis It could have been that, or just yelling or who knows. Something was going very wrong and not being addressed and this guy pours gasoline on it and makes it everyone's problem. Why would he buy a child in that state a gun? I'm floored.

@futurebird Geeeez. The way he was like “You tell him” feels like a total abnegation of his role as the father. And man, if you’re trying to teach your kid responsible gun ownership, leaving them lying around is, well, not that.

@futurebird There are sadly too many who view bullying as just how people interact and maintain social structures. They’re fine with telling kids to stand up to bullies, because blaming the victim is easier than understanding all the issues at play and addressing things like physical and mental abuse at home, income inequality, neurodiversity, etc, in a productive and healthy way. Way too much work. /depressed sigh/

@queenofnewyork It's fine to give a child strategies for dealing with bullies better. But, if it's really bullying* it's not the child's responsibility to solve the problem. *Bullying is about rejecting a member of a community as an equal and denying them the respect that others can count on and expect.

@queenofnewyork Identifying "video games" or "social media" as the problem makes it seem like the problem is much easier to solve than it really is. I can see why it attracts people... but yeah.

@futurebird the idea of a safe space is foreign to someone who has never felt unsafe. If various privileges insulate you from danger and even consequences, you'd think about safety as much as a fish thinks about water.

@futurebird Yup. But even the dad being like “I take him hunting to get him away from the video games.” I bet he can’t even tell you which games the kid played, who he played them with, how often, etc. I mean at least it sounds like he was trying to spend time with him, but why does that time have to involve guns? Why couldn’t he have picked up a game controller?!
