I'd say that this is what "everyone" has watched.Shows that lean more on the action side of mahou shoujo (Shakugan no Shana, Kill La Kill) often end up being more like shonen with a female protagonist. Shows that lean more on the comedy/ecchi side (Mahoako, Mahou Shoujo Ore) are a lot closer to comedy/ecchi shows with frilly outfits. Starting out you should *really* get into the shows that revolve around romantic/psychological struggles, just to get a feel for the themes.

It's not the first nor last to have a lot of the elements it does, but it uses the dark tone to take a more mature glance at the subtle consequences of it's tropes that other shows glance over. So it's generally one you want to push out a series or so before checking in so you can get the baseline normal to really feel out the tropes it's playing straight. Also Homura is my favorite, she's cute.

It also happens to have fight scenes. While the show has a lot of filler, I like watching the characters get along with each other so it's good filler. I'm only now getting to the last few eps in hte final season because I love the show so much. I'm glad the original has such a high epsiode count because taking this long journey with the characters was wonderful.However, if you want to watch only one season of it, I'd recommend Sailor Moon S.image.png
