I'll be honest I thought that getting "tea drunk" was a tea head myth. The notion that simply drinking a good quality puerh or oolong cup after cup for about an hour will "send you to another realm" sounded like typical tea hype.However. Maybe there is something to this. It's not like just having too much caffeine. Or it's like having "too much" caffeine in some new kind of way. Have you ever been "tea drunk" ?

@futurebird At least I can remember two times when I needed to vomit after drinking a lot of green tea in the morning without having eaten anything. But this felt a lot worse than being actually drunken. :)

@mhoye Absolutely not. Your typical tea head would be offended by this notion... not because of the implication of using narcotics, but because to the tea head teach is ONLY every one plant: The Tea Tree. Thus a narcotic herbal tea isn't even really "tea"

@futurebird A few cups of a good strong puerh can induce a sense of deep wellbeing not dissimilar to the late effects of THC. (Not so much the early "buzz" or impairment part.)

@futurebird I've had it, and it's definitely different to having had too much coffee. It's like... getting a little loopy? instead of the anxiety and cold sweat too much coffee gives me.

@futurebird I keep a large tin of pure powdered caffeine next to my other tea accoutrement.I *have* had "I can see the universe" moments from my tea, but very definitely from the caffeine. Works much better with black tea than most others -- the unexpected bitterness of caffeine in the wrong drink (e.g. orange juice, white tea) can be *vile*. Black tea is at least *supposed* to be a bit bitter.

@futurebird a giddy, "seeing through time" feeling is a well-known symptom of having had an awful lot more caffeine than you usually have. If you go a month or more without caffeine, your tolerance for caffeine will erode and you can reproduce the effect with much lower levels of caffeine, but if you're a regular caffeine user, your tolerance will be high and it will take a lot more than you usually use to get the effect. Can be dangerous, especially if you have heart problems.

@futurebird I get chill from drinking a lot of tea in a way that I don't with coffee.Don't know if it is something in the tea or if it is just that a pot of tasty, warm goodness makes me happy.

@futurebird Tea professional here, it's less tea drunk and more tea high, but it's definitely due to the caffeine, it's just that bodies can process tea differently due to things like L-theanine. Some people just get jitters, some get a tea high…tea highs tend to be more associated with drinking lots of resteeps of a (looseleaf or pressed) tea because you get more of an extended release effect so it stretches things out.

@futurebird @mhoye I mean, it's all semantics and whether or not it matters depends on the context. I've always explained it like, "an herbal tea is tea the same way a veggie burger is a burger—you consume it the same way, so in one sense it's the same, but it's made from different ingredients, so in another sense it's not." So if someone is vegetarian (analogous to someone who can't have caffeine), it's important to know whether they can consume what you have available or not, for example.

@futurebird Apart from the caffeine and theanine, pu-erh in particular is actually fermented, primarily by an aspergillus, so it's not impossible that it sometimes gets a touch psychoactive.

@futurebird Theanine is an unexpectedly, extremely potent antianxiety med/antidepressant that you can get otc and is for some reason not very talked about. Personally, it makes me feel kinda "meh" about stressful situations and blissed out otherwise. But you'd need to drink a LOT of tea to get the effect you get from a pill of that.

@futurebird i drink so much tea. and this has never happened to me.a lot of loose leaf good stuff too. i've never heard of it either.however, i am also usually high on cannabis.someone mentionied puerh being liked cannabis? lmfao not IMO. not even a little bit.i do, once in awhile, drink holy basil (rama tulsi) bc it helps reduce my anxiety and makes me a lil sleepy.

@futurebird There's a certain pleasant "calming buzz" or "calm focus" that you get after a good cup or several cups of tea, yes. I wouldn't describe it as "drunk" or sending me to another realm.Whether this is just a type of caffeine buzz, or the L-theanine, or an interaction of the two or any of the other thousands of phytochemicals in tea - I don't know. But as I drink my tea plain, it's much healthier for me than sugary coffee, energy drinks, soda, or alcohol. So I shall continue.

@futurebird Now that the poll has closed I've gone back and read the comments. Seems many of you are drinking pu-ehr. I recently purchased some (with dried chrysanthemum flowers, which is delightful and worth a try) and have been brewing it, but haven't got "tea drunk" yet. As I commented earlier, perhaps I'm just not doing it right. Some rainy day (we haven't had one recently) I need to stay home and drink a whole pot--or until I am tea drunk.

@futurebird maybe it's "special tea". Like you might find in an Amsterdam coffee shop. Allegedly.
