Contemporary car design is so ugly. Every car looks like an old man who got too much plastic surgery with angry anime eyes. The forms are neither geometric and pure, nor are the taken from nature— it’s just a pointless collision of swooshes like the Nike logo and swerves that gesture at aerodynamics without being functional or beautiful to behold. The colors are aggressively frumpy— the textures plastic so that even when brand new they do not shine.

@futurebird The new USPS vans are designed to be practical for the drivers and safe for people outside the vans.Honestly IMO this is approaching what the pretty much all vans/trucks/buses etc should look like up front.Might hurt the feelings of some snowflake machistas, but their feelings aren't as important as not killing people.

@futurebird a YouTuber I watch calls CUVs (you know, essentially station wagons but made to look like SUVs; like, an SUV that will get stuck in the snow) "blob cars". They're ridiculously common around here and now it's all I can think of when I see one. They're so shapeless, and tall for literally no reason but ppl wanting to be high up.

@nev I don’t get it at all. I can understand the allure of a powerful and functional but ugly car. Or an elegant but not as functional but user-centered urban car. But we have neither. No grace, no style, no power. Like Ax body spray but as design. Only a 13 year old boy would see anything of value in th design language and even her will regret it.

@futurebird @nev I've been calling these types of vehicles "bigass SUVs" and "bigass pickups" for years and I shake my head at the fact that they're no common. Another reason why they're common is that they fall under the "Light Truck" category in the CAFE standards instead of "Passenger Car" so they have less stringent standards on what they can emit. That and the car companies make more profit off of them than they do smaller cars.

@futurebird @marcfranz8 A lot of this is the result of aesthetic choices, but there are also design constraints around modern safety and performance requirements. I wish we had a lower speed class of cars subject to fewer constraints, which would allow for more varied design choices. Nobody needs a big, fast car in a city.

@futurebird There were some excellent and attractive automotive designs used in the past, and those styles are still appreciated by the public. Why not just make cars that look like that, but are EVs or hybrids?

@dx @futurebird @marcfranz8 But these still allow for small cars like the VW Up. It's not a beauty, but quite functional and all the car most folks need. (They are out of production because VW claims small cars are no longer cost-effecient to produce.)Heck, small cars and most vans don't have this artificially high motor compartments that are so problematic in SUVs.The only reason SUVs have such features is to make them look more "muscular" and less like a station wagon.

@billiglarper @futurebird @marcfranz8 I do wonder if electric cars will see a significant shift in nose design. So far, they haven’t, but you have a bit more design flexibility with electric, I think.I really wish they sold station wagons still. Even the things called station wagons are really just SUVs these days, at least for what we get in North America.

@dx @futurebird @marcfranz8 Yes, it will be interessting to see more "designed as electric only" cars. Personally, I wouldn't expect that much difference. I would guess aerodynamics and crumple zone define a lot of the car front. They could probably make it a bit more stubby. Like a Smart. Not sure buyers would like that aesthetic, though.

If someone offered me a free brand new car, and even promised to pay for parking I think I’d still say “no thanks” granted I live in NYC and cars mostly make people unhappy here— but I like machines and gadgets and there’s just not much to get excited about compared to the subway. Why would I want to wait in a line to go to a place? And then be inside of a huge object when I get there and also angry?

@futurebird @nev We have a 2004 Honda Element. It looks like the mutant offspring of a minivan and a pickup as envisioned by a mad scientist. Even at 22mpg, it is unbelievably functional. It is the transformer of cars. We fit a twin mattress in the back when I couldn't sit long enough to get to the doctor. It's uncarpeted, so evacuating two carsick dogs in a hurricane wasn't a disaster. It maneuvers like a small car. And I don't know how we'll replace it.

@futurebird What about classic manufacturers that actually (tend to) honor their design heritage? Think Porsche 911 or Aston Martin DB11, for example.Sure, most folks can’t afford them, and you could argue endlessly about the point of such impractical, “useless” vehicles. 😉From a design standpoint, though, I think they still look clean, reasonably simple, and definitely one-of-a-kind. (Unless you buy them in some cement gray color. That is always unforgivable.)cc: @riotnrrd
