@futurebird The odd thing being that the ones whining about it are the ones you'd imagine are happy with that. One bragged about murdering her dog for having had the time of its life, others don't have pets and would probably suck the souls out of them, others brag about murdering animals they don't eat...

@Nonya_Bidniss I have this story I've written a few chapters of about a woman with a superpower that allows her to freeze time. She can do things while the world is frozen and it's mostly about her discovering this power and how to use it. In the story she drives a thinly disguised Tucker Carlson mad using this power ... but, now I'm wondering if something like this is happening in real life to Trump. He can see them right there! Eating them! But no one else notices...

@Nonya_Bidniss When Tucker got demoted I lost interest in it. But, now I'm thinking... maybe it's worth adding a few more chapters.

@futurebird @Nonya_Bidniss if time is frozen, and you decide to go for a walk in the park (good thing you opened the front door before freezing time) and admire bees, butterflies, and birds stuck motionless in mid-flight, look at the frozen landscaped waterfall, etc, how do all the time-frozen air molecules get out of your way so you can walk around looking at time-frozen things?

@llewelly @Nonya_Bidniss She can move objects, including air when it’s frozen although everything has an inertia. If she makes a lot of changes it causes popping sounds from the air renormalizing when she unfreezes.

@robotistry @llewelly @Nonya_Bidniss She can breathe out and in the molecules that come in contact with her can be stirred to motion. There are some unsettling effects: when she moves people around (which is very difficult since people are heavy and have a lot of inertia) the places where she has touched them feel cool or hot when time restarts. Imagine if the hairs on your arm were suddenly rearranged!

@robotistry @llewelly @Nonya_Bidniss Though I live suggestions. I don’t want to over burden the story with science— this power is basically magical and motivated by the protagonist’s feeling that she needs more time. But I love the scary and messy implications for physics.

@futurebird @robotistry @Nonya_Bidniss 1/2I love this and it reminds me of a series of short stories set in a world with a world-wide network of instant transportation booths, but one of the drawbacks of the booths was any change in velocity necessary due to the different relative velocities of the booths

@futurebird @robotistry @llewelly @Nonya_Bidniss Nicholson Baker's infamously salacious The Fermata has fun with a more philosophical approach to freezing time. i'd recommend it, but only if you are very broad-minded.

@futurebird @robotistry @llewelly @Nonya_Bidniss So if she picks something up, gravity affects it, I guess. Would a clock (wind up?) start ticking? Presumably the local power plant wouldn't start up because she grabbed a plugged in appliance. Nor would kicking the ground start the Earth spinning. Would a flashlight work? How about those little metal bouncing balls on strings? Not that these need to be settled for a story. It's just where my mind goes.

@futurebird I heard his ā€œtuneā€ on some news broadcast. The cadence and emphasis seemed like a clear example of ā€˜dog whistle' incitement. (the deniability in public discourse ā€”ā€œI was joking; you misunderstoodā€ gaslighting is a fascist stunt.)
