I would adore a built in LED ring to make macro photos better— and there are some powerful things one can do by integrating a camera app with light control. For you normies who don’t care about bugs this could also make for really lovely selfies or anything where the subject is close. Don’t think of it as a flash. Flashes suck.

@futurebird Battery life - everything else is useless if your phone is dead. For the past 20 years part of packing for every daytrip or greater has been making sure I have packed cables, that the back up batteries are fully recharged, that I stay away from certain power hungry apps, etc. Manufacturers, DROP EVERYTHING AND LET ME NEVER THINK ABOUT THE BATTERIES UNTIL DAY 3 OF MY EXCURSION. Everything else is a waste of time.

@futurebird Have you tried one of the micro fiber optic cams that plug into the USB port on your phone? they are often used as inspection cams for drains and small openings. Most of the time they have pretty good lights in them, if inferior quality camera resolution. 3MP is what mine is. it is great at looking at things like hair follicles or micro printing on stamps.

@futurebird The olympus tg series of point&shoot cameras has an LED ring attachment. It allows for lovely even lighting of subjects from a few cm to a few mm away from the lens. The whole package is about the size of a phone. The controls are clunky compared to an actual camera, but otherwise it's a banger of a pocket macro system.

@futurebird Conceptually, I would have picked battery life, but I have external batteries I carry around, and I can get better ones if they start failing.Basically, I already tend to try to compensate for decreasing battery life as far as I can before I get a new one. (There’s also the fact that it does degrade.)Of the ones left, taking prettier pictures appeal to me the most.
