I want someone to make a nice simple monitor with like 7 inputs (2xDP, 2xhdmi, DVI, VGA, and composite) and then to have mechanical radio buttons on the front to switch between them. NO AUTO SWITCHING EVER

@foone you don't want to reach around the back and click the joystick in, move it sideways until input source appears, click the joystick in, move it sideways to select the input and then click it in again to finally switch to it?

@foone Auto switching is evil if someone is actually making use of the monitor for it's multiple input capabilities. You lose sync and suddenly the monitor is scanning through inputs and lands on something else and you're forced to dig through menus to switch it back. At the least, you need a "stay on current input when signal not detected" option to handle when you momentarily turn of a box.

@foone I always strongly favor monitors with discrete physical per input buttons. You think I'm going to buy your monitor which is so cheap that it only has four capacitive touch buttons? That is a sure sign the monitor is going to be complete trash in every other way.

@foone oh my god 10,000% same. No auto switching and no making me navigate a damn on screen menu using invisible, unlabeled buttons. Argh!

95% of what I want is just to be free from "whoops, one of the computers turned off the display for 2 seconds while rebooting, clearly you want to switch back to HDMI input #1"

@foone that's one reason I still use my old Dell TV on my PC, it has 2 HDMI, VGA with audio input, 3 composite, 2 component, ATSC and NTSC tuners. The LCD is pretty low contrast by today's standard, and 1366x768 isn't great for a modern computer UI but it's fine for watching videos and playing games. It will be harder to hook everything back up to a modern screen when it dies

@foone These guys are your friend: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BR7QTYWS/You can even reflash them over I2C or w/e if you want a different EDID.

@foone For mobile use in the data center I'd just like a plain-old-VGA monitor with no other inputs... because it's the data center, there are no other outputs.

@foone the Samsung monitor I own actually does have an option to disable auto-switching. I have it off. Switching manually is mildly annoying but not too bad. There are 3 programmable macro buttons but they can't be set to switch to a certain input. ☹️

@foone my old Dell monitor was great, DVI, VGA, component, composite & S-video. No auto-switching. My last Dell monitor dropped the analogue inputs, but still no auto-switching. My current Dell monitor now has auto-switching (possibly disableable), and it always keeps inactive inputs connected, so those machines have a phantom display and don’t just move your windows to the visible display. _That’s_ the feature I want, but my google-fu isn’t good enough to find a KVM that has that feature.

@foone The next problem then will be monitors that go to powersave immediately and take so long to wake up again that half the boot messages have already gone by when you finally get to see an image again...

@Genstar what, the autoswitching? Not on my monitor. Maybe if I open it up and dump the ROM and hack it, but that sounds hard
