@interfluidity @ryanlcooper in the 80s my whole family worked for a seed company doing field work, most importantly corn pollination work (self mating and detassling). Three years after I graduated, all the employees were Latino.

@interfluidity @ryanlcooper I lived near and commuted through agricultural fields in southern California. The farmworkers pick strawberries faster than you can really see, and arrange them perfectly in those little baskets you buy at the supermarket. As soon as they have a full flat, about 10-12 minutes, they _run_ to drop it off at the central loading location.(continued)

@interfluidity Or celery: bend down with sword-sharp machete, slice off, remove outer leaves while straightening, stretch restraining band on the bunch while positioning it in the delivery box. Bend down, slice, straighten, position, bend down, slice, etc., repeat for eight hours.A few years ago a goofy Repub said we could use prison labor for farm work. I remember laughing out loud. a) Prisoners have some rights. b) _Nobody_ works like that for minimum wage unless they're running from death.

@interfluidity @ryanlcooper I was doing work for the US Dept of Labor — specifically the office tasked with enforcing the Migrant & Seasonal Worker Protection Act — in the 2010s when GA briefly passed their idiotic anti-immigrant nonsense the last time we went through this. When crops rotted in the fields they quietly undid it.It wasn’t (just) that nobody wanted to work that hard for those wages; it’s also incredibly skilled work that demands particular attention to the biomechanics.
