Is there a universal music playlist protocol that can be done in plain text and imported into a wide variety of music apps? (I doubt it but if anyone knows they’d be on here)

@futurebird not sure you'd call it a protocol but m3u8 is the Playlist file format since Winamp... Still used by some players and for all the streaming apps

@futurebirdM3u should do well, but does not always like Unicode/UTF-8 characters...

@futurebird m3u8 (8 for Unicode) and most will take urls for paths, but not all will take relative file paths. I think

@futurebird Also, Soundizz will convert playlists from one service to another for free. As in, it will populate the destination 1:1. Obviously, the premium service comes with more features, but I have only needed that once.https://soundiiz.com

@futurebird As everyone else mentioned, M3U. M3U is basically just a list of filenames. I don't do streaming services. I generate M3Us for folders in my music collection by opening a command prompt and simply listing the files to an M3U file.VLC has a playlist format that uses XML. I don't know how universal their format is.

@futurebird the problem is likely that providers don't map from a URI to one of their songs. So you can't have one reference that will work unambiguously on iPlayer and Spotify. Music also seems to be terribly catalogued, figuring out if a particular thing you'd listened to us the same as another is hard. It's the same recording as remixed, is it an edit, is it a different recording entirely but by the same artist? Or is it identical but licensed for a different region? Any or all of these could be the same song or different depending on factors I have no understanding of.https://musicbrainz.org/ seems to attempt to resolve this but results are patchy. But for a shared playlist it makes it tricky. Some people would want that exact version or nothing, others would be happy so long as it was about right.

@futurebird well, let's just say that when I went through the music collection of my 11 yrs younger brother, I saw a LOT of unicode-only characters in song and album names, and for lots of playlist formats, that is a problem. And when I asked him what he does about it, he said "you taught me to use find and xargs, and that's all I need."and yeah, that's how I taught him, but I do it with a *much* smaller music collection, which has far, far less Asian music.

@futurebird something I've been wishing for is a browser plugin that redirects, say, Spotify URLs, to the music service of my choice (or, simpler, a landing page with links to all services)

@futurebird it should be rss, but sadly everyone abandoned rss.
