I think what a lot of space based conspiracy theorists don't understand is that trying to hide a spaceship/space station/space laser in space, is like trying to hide a car in the middle of a big empty warehouse.

@Aaron_DeVries @nyrath I sometimes get conspiracists who imagine that if SETI succeeded and found an alien signal, it could be covered up.The reality being that it would be shining there in the sky where half of the world could see it at once.

@dashdsrdash @Aaron_DeVries When it comes down to it, these analogies don't really help. You just have to bite the bullet and do some BOE calculations with specific scenarios. For example, one idea I really like is interstellar (alien) probes that travel from star system to star system via stellar gravity slingshots. This is a cool example because we already have several space telescopes staring at the Sun 24/7. Could we see an interstellar probe doing a solar flyby? So I did BOE!1/2

@dashdsrdash @Aaron_DeVries Unfortunately, existing sun staring telescopes would need such a probe to be perhaps 300km in diameter to see. That's frustrating to me. An alien probe could be right before our (robotic) eyes, and we wouldn't see it.But it does suggest possible parameters for a space telescope designed to look for these alien probes.2/2

@isaackuo @dashdsrdash in the context of most of the secret space agency and space weapon conspiracies the applicable area is cislunar space and LEO. The people who assume they can hide massive structures in LEO like massive stations, laser weapons or big ships coming and going from Earth without anyone seeing. An interstellar spacecraft never coming close to Earth is much easier to miss.

@Aaron_DeVries @dashdsrdash LEO? Sure, that's a tough place to hide something big.Coming and going from Earth? Not as clear. If aliens want to be stealthy and are familiar with our sensors, there are possibilities, depending on what technology they have.Secret lunar base, though, possibly including laser weapons capable of targeting people on Earth? That's actually doable without putting any particular effort into studying Earth sensors. Now if we're NOT talking aliens, but a1/2

@Aaron_DeVries @dashdsrdash secret human space agency, the real big deal killer is space launch. The only seriously developed space launch technology we humans have got are big powerful rocket boosters, which are EXTREMELY visible.Furthermore, we have numerous sensor systems devoted to detecting any sort of space launch ASAP.2/2

@isaackuo @dashdsrdash I'm not talking aliens, funny enough a lot of the space based conspiracies involve governments hiding things in space. With some people unironically believing all forest fires recently that cause property damage are caused by a space laser controlled by either the US government or some nebulous new world order.Of course they don't factor how much infrared such a platform would dump, the launches needed to build it, and so on.

@Aaron_DeVries @dashdsrdash Well, this is why we need to talk specifics rather than crude analogies. A secret space laser is possible, depending on the power level desired.Even though a secret space launch is impossible, it's possible to piggyback on a known space launch with a secret payload. There are lots of upper stages up there, any of which could house a secret space laser.A chemical laser wouldn't radiate all that much heat, although the exhaust could be visible.1/2

@Aaron_DeVries @dashdsrdash An electric laser could be stealthier, using radiators pointed in the hemisphere away from Earth (practically invisible even if someone were looking for it due to the background radiation of the Earth itself). The conspiracy theory still doesn't make sense, but the basic possibility of a secret orbital laser is ... well it IS possible.2/2
