"Can you imagine you’re a parent and your son leaves the house and you say, ‘Jimmy, I love you so much, go have a good day at school’ and your son comes back with a brutal operation, can you even imagine this? What the hell is wrong with our country?"Trump has made this kind of claim multiple times. It is not a joke, he either thinks this happens or thinks he can convince people it happens. How do you even respond to such nonsense?

Just one example of the kind of steaming whoppers that are typical of Trump's rhetoric. Calling everyone he dislikes a communist happens so often it's hardly worth mentioning. He claims that he won an election he lost, that the nation is going to hell, that "migrant crime" has us all cowering in our homes. I find myself agreeing with those who say there isn't much to be gained from a "debate" --you can't debate the counterfactual.

I don't plan on watching the debate. I will likely read transcripts and look at some clips. I'm curious what sort of people *will* be watching? In theory "the American people" will tune in to get to know Harris better and see what Trump does. It's supposed to be a big event but is anyone really looking forward to it?Sadly I think what will matter most is that Harris never look 'rattled' that she projects total confidence and calm.

So, the debate is just a posturing contest. One that Biden couldn't win. He seemed confused, uncertain. And since no one seems to care about the facts the person who looks more confident and assured will win. I think Harris can pull that off. But it all seems very pointless.

@futurebird I think by gently pointing out that in your experience school nurses can't give out Advil without a prescription and a letter from home. And maybe feigning something closer to confusion than disdain.

@futurebird I think it's important that she doesn't spend any time trying to disprove any lies. Just say "there you go, making stuff up again" and move on to her message.

@futurebird debating Trump head on, I'd pass on. I didn't even think I could stomach watching it. But if someone I knew personally was parroting back this nonsense, I'd point out one or two obvious holes and let them take it from there.

@futurebird I agree that there's little to be gained from the debate. As a citizen I think it's -EVBut I'll be watching it anyway because the shared experience of MST3K'ing the circus part of "bread and circuses" has some value to me. Some of the live commentary here on Mastodon during these events is entertaining[Again, that's the consumer in me talking, not the citizen]

@futurebird Whenever Harris follows Trump, she should say something like "What my opponent just said is mostly lies, deception, or exaggerations but here is what I think" and just go on. Trump hates to be dismissed so this will likely rattle him. Also, it will give her more time to score her own points rather than unintentionally promoting his.

@joepie91 This can work well online. I can be pretty effective in this space where I can ask people questions when they start spouting nonsense. But this debate is an isolated space. It's just whatever they say. (Though should Harris make *any* inflated or exaggerated claim the press will talk about it for weeks.)Trump has been having a lot of trouble remembering names and details. If that's exposed...

@futurebird The people both sides hope will be watching are the people who will decide the election. The people who are — and this is the kind way to put it — "undecided." Calling them undecided is like calling me undecided about what the Higgs Boson is.They're morons. They barely know who Trump and Harris are, never mind having opinions about them. They're either going to go "I like how that Trump talks" or "I like how that Harris talks" or "Whoa, that Trump guy's a lunatic" or "Oh, Harris is Black."And then they might decide who to vote for, or, more likely, they'll forget the whole thing until they're handed a ballot, if they vote, at which point they'll cast their vote based on whatever caught their attention in the previous 24 hours.

@futurebird I've also grown more skeptical about the entire framing of debates as a means towards informing and influencing. There seems to be a huge emphasis on the whole "dEbAtE mE" schtick among conservatives, in part because they're combative confabulists that think the world owes them that, and in part because of a possibily misplaced value assigned to the classical tradition of debate. But where's the evidence for debate doing any good?

@DaveMWilburn I would enjoy a written debate where each is able to ask five questions and given a limited number of characters to respond. Then they could meet in person and read the questions and responses and ask each other a single follow-up question to be answered in real time.

@futurebird A lot of people just aren't paying attention to the rallies and such. The news still balks at calling him a liar and showing his worst moments. A debate has a chance to show/remind people who and what he is.Harris has two jobs:1. To point out the lies, absurdities, and dangers.2. To demonstrate that she's fully qualified.I think she can do both. IDK how many will watch or be convinced.

@futurebird I think debates are important at the primary stage, less so at this point. But then, his disastrous debate performance is what led to Biden dropping out, so what do I know?

@futurebird "One that Biden couldn't win. He seemed confused, uncertain."Which is exactly why people still watch debates. They are one of the only unscripted times people still see candidates where the candidate is in conflict with someone else, and therefore the only time you get to see something about how they actually will react.

@futurebird I've got a colleague whose class time coincides with the debate broadcast, who is thinking about using some class time for this. (The election & outcome relate to the course topic.)

@futurebird I always see the response to the debate as the real news.Does it shift polls, do people change their mind about the candidates? When watching a political debate, I just feel annoyed by grownups constantly talking over each other.

@futurebird I'm mainly curious to see how Kamela will deal with Trump's outright lies and to see if when he tries to stream of consciousness for the entire time, if they'll cut the mic.My guess is that she's going to try and push his buttons to the point he gets mad and says some truly batshit crazy stuff.Once again though, I'm interested to see how she'll attempt this.
