This list of Trump bragging comes from an article by Ralph Nadar who clear doesn't want anyone pinning anything on him this time (good on you, Ralph)Reading it I reflect on how I've never said anything like this, even in the narrow instances where it might by almost true. (No one knows more about securing carpenter ants in wooden formicaria than I do? Maybe?)But I also think about **who** is "allowed" to make such statements. https://nader.org/2024/09/06/his-delusions-lead-to-trumpian-dangers/

Also, I always think it's sad when the people who know more about a topic than you do are few in number. I doubt a good president would be the one who knows the most in any significant category that isn't related to details of the office. And a president ought to be deeply aware of this-- and skilled in finding those people who know more. Is it unreasonable to expect this?

@futurebird OH BOY, you've missed out on all the drama?I'm so thrilled to tell you about this. You can look the details online, but briefly, old Japanese mathematician comes up with theory that proves the abc conjecture, nobody can understand what he's saying, his fan club says he's right, everyone else says it's nonsense, Mochizuki starts flinging insults and accusations of persecution and there's a respected Math Overflow poster who comments on the drama by creating a new user every time he posts because he doesn't seem to understand how to log in to the user he created previously.

There is something very fundamental I do not understand about Trump because saying you know everything like this is such a huge turn-off for me. But, I'm coming to understand that there are people who just mostly take it to be true if they hear it enough. People who expect everyone to inflate and brag and so assume those who don't must lack confidence. It's the language of advertising I suppose. You say your softdrink is "the most refeshing"

@futurebird He’s recently covered ALL the bases by saying “Trump is always right. I hate to be right. I'm always right” 🤪

I will give him one thing:No one know more about lying with confidence to millions of people and getting away with it than Donald Trump. He is simply the best at telling huge obvious lies right to the face of those who know better and getting out two or three more before they can stop sputtering and respond. It is unforgettable (unfortunately) and remarkable (because as much as I want to ignore him that was a mistake in 2016)

@futurebird This is what flummoxed Biden in their debate: presented with a firehose of lies, Joe didn't know where to start.

@futurebirdI think that there are people for whom to admit that they don't know something is nothing but a sign of weakness. So they can't. If you ask them a question to which they don't know an answer they wil immediately pull something out of their ass, no matter how incredible. Because to say "I don't know" is something a loser would do, or something.

@alter_kaker Never saying "I don't know" is what people who never learn anything say. In a world that is always changing this makes one remarkably incapable of making good decisions or not sounding like you are totally clueless. I think this is something we need to work on in education since some of this starts in the classroom I fear.

@futurebird I think you're describing the "Captain Kirk" model of leadership, where the top person is smart and can make decisions, but knows that they don't know everything and need to rely on compatriots with specialized expertise (Spock, McCoy and the bridge bunnies) to solve problems. In this analogy, Trump is Zapp Brannigan.

@futurebird the demographic that's entertained and emboldened by Trump's performance are far to the left of average intelligence. They find his third grade vocabulary to be inclusive. They are also the prime targets for scammers.

@futurebirdThere definitely are:1) teachers who never say "I don't know" 2) teachers who punish children for not knowing And that could definitely play a role. We have a school system that empowers and incentivizes discipline over teaching, unfortunately. No wonder, since it evolved from some 19th century Prussian nonsense
