I'm still mad. If you watched the "child care 'plan' press conference" you would see a man caught flat-footed by a question on a topic he just doesn't care about. What will he do about the high cost of child care? He had no answer to this. But rather than saying "We are investigating many possibilities" or similar dodges he implied that tariffs could easy pay for some kind of government childcare plan. Media took all this seriously and sane washed the ramble.

@futurebird but if Dog forbid he does get into the White House again and he starts going after journalists and the media, hard, it's going to be all "why won't people come defend the media!" 🙄

What about JD Vance? Asked the same question he came very close to saying something like "well if women would just stay in the kitchen we wouldn't have this problem" but then seeming to remember his difficulties with such voters in real time pinned it on grand parents. Or let's be real "post menopausal females" (But only those who have physically given birth some point!)Then he talked about how daycares are over-regulated. Since he thinks early child education is BS.

The lack of attention to this topic, the terrible half thought out solutions are the real story. These two are thinking "why don't you just hire a nanny?" or "just have one of your wives stay home and raise the kid what's the big deal?"This problem is alien to them. Even as they claim that only they understand the struggles of ordinary families.

As a math teacher who teaches "advanced" subjects some creepy right winger will try to cozy up to me with a line about how "math teacher really ought to be paid more, you are more skilled in demand"There is no faster way to get on my WORST side. My peers who work with younger children have just as much if not more "skill" and since I've started teaching lower grades I've had to learn so much. The assumption that there's "nothing to it" does a disservice to children.

Day care and pre-k aren't trivial endeavors. It's obvious this is true if you look at what people who aren't worried about money choose. No one skimps on early education. It's super expensive and the places who do it well are swamped with more families than they can server no matter how high they raise the prices. And that's because it matters. And it ought not be out of reach for most families. We could do this right. But I don't think anyone is even considering that.

@futurebird I taught HS science. My wife taught kindergarten. I could never have done her job. And it has nothing to do with the pee, poop, puke, boogers, and blood she dealt with daily. A completely different skill set.

@futurebird I thought Trump did an excellent job, with especially intelligent observations such as "child care is...child care" and "in this country you have to have it." But as he also implied, "those numbers are so small" as president he shouldn't have to worry about child care. Like JD Vance explained, that's grandma's problem. 😈

@futurebird there's a really interesting book called Fear City: New York's fiscal crisis and the rise of austerity politics by Kim Phillips Fein. Going into the 1970s NYC had free healthcare, childcare, the best public research library in the world (free) etc. But a group of businessmen, including, you guessed it, Donald Trump, convinced banks to stop financing these programs. This lead to "Ford to City Drop Dead"

@futurebird I have a friend from HS who retired as a chemist for Campbell's soup and started teaching science to 9-11 year olds. He's having the best time. I think that would have been my lower limit as well. He does a displacement demo where he gets in a wetsuit and submerges himself in a 55 gallon drum. He's wonderful.

@futurebird Can confirm. And even the most elite places struggle with things like the pandemic because they don’t have government support. They are on their own and bad things happen still.

@futurebird I was a media specialist. When I escaped a vindictive high school principal by transferring to an elementary school, I had colleagues who asked me if I had to take a pay cut. We're not paid by how tall they are, I replied. I much preferred the elementary gig—the challenges were much more interesting!

@futurebird Taking care of a 14yo seems a lot less work and easier than taking care of a 4yo.I'm at least 90% sure the 14yo won't sneak off to try the candy I'm hiding under the sink.I'm 0% sure of what a 4yo will do next. A lot of surprises. No, seriously, little kids aren't easy mode for their caretaker.Fun, exciting, eventful, tiring, but definitely not easy.

@justafrog And there is so much to learn and so much skill required to understand how to provide the best level of support. With teens it's fairly safe to lean towards "let them figure it out!" (but keep an eye out to see if it's going ok) most of the time, but that's not safe or ideal for younger kids.

@futurebird Basically you have to run a simulation for each toddler so you're able to guess where they are, constantly, as well as what they're likely to do there. And check regularly if they're where you think they are, doing what you thought. And run like hell when a toddler is wandering out of bounds or doing something way too dangerous. Can't imagine doing it with 10+ of them at once.

@futurebird This reminded me of something I noticed as a K12 student (many decades ago.) K-5 all my teachers were women. By 12, they were almost all men. Guess who got paid more.

@futurebird whats even more disturbing is the applause he received from this room full of Economic experts i presume? The Eco Club of NY, i mean they sould know it better i guess?.. i didnt get the applause, maybe they filled the room with Zombie Trumpists and they faked everthing? but thats just feeble attempt for an explanation, im lost; convicted 34 times, still pending, again delayed sentencing..and more to come, still spews his tropes unhinged like :thisisfine:

@futurebird imagine. daycares over-regulated. when we constantly have stories of daycare fuck-ups in our news feeds, like the one who left her edibles within reach of the children and parents were picking up stoned toddlers.

@futurebird JD Vance strikes me as the kind of person who doesn’t know infant CPR because he’s never thought to learn it.

@futurebird I'm in awe of the math education my children get. Back in my days I would learn one strategy largely through rote leaning for each problem (addition, multiplication) and that's it. Last year in third grade my oldest learned multiple approaches for each problem type, which is so powerful
