Having bugs, mold, mice or other living things in human spaces (even outdoor spaces) is seen as a sign of neglect and linked to poverty there stigmas when talking about the wildlife in our homes and gardens. Indeed poor management of the ecosystems, that are rarely recognized as being ecosystems at all can lead to upsetting an even dangerous conditions. The polite fiction that no one has a roach or mouse in their house is counterproductive. You cannot manage what you refuse to see.

The "Green Club" faculty are a little confused about my idea of doing a "local wildlife survey" for the school: but I'm super curious about the number of species we can identify on school grounds! Inside and out. Everyone wants to pretend there are no ants in the cafeteria and no roaches in the basement and it's driving me batty. You are NOT alone! You are never alone... there are bugs.

In particular if you are uncomfortable with some "guests" it's even more critical that you know who they are and why there are there. It's a simple fact that the middle school attracts mice. Now why is that exactly?(Looking pointedly at the granola bar wrappers on the floor in the middle school reading room.)

@futurebird I'm always pleased when I find a spider in the house (there are no dangerous ones here), hoping it's helping keep harmful bugs at bay.

@futurebird It's a fact with recorded evidence, that in London, you are never more than 50 feet from a rat. :DThey are everywhere. :DIf you see urban foxes, then you know there is something keeping the local rat population down. :DWhen the railway near one housing estate in SE London removed on of the local dens of foxes, within two weeks, there were swarms of rats plaguing that estate.

@futurebird pretending things aren't there sounds like a terrible mistake for a place of learning. you seem hard you say no to for long though. I'm certain you'll get em. I'm really excited to hear about your findings! and maybe even learn a method anyplace can use.

@futurebird I share your entomological interest, and I hope this goes well, but the news industry's deep-seated desire to exploit entomophobia means that a single overhyped news story could turn a few ants in an otherwise well-managed cafeteria into a political firestorm, complete with lawsuits and a drenching in insecticide.

@futurebird@sauropods.win idk, i never saw or heard of mice in my high school, and the hallways became a garbage dump every lunch hour despite there being plenty of garbage cans around, once everyone learned that the school cafeteria was the Asshole Room.

@futurebird I enjoyed the book NEVER HOME ALONE about this, though it was still a little rough in moments because of all my narratives to date.

@futurebird @eigen Can you do something about the cricket that is setting off my iPhone alerts? Every night at 2:30am, all my Apple devices buzzing telling me to check if fire alarms are going off!

@secretsloth I found a version on etsy, though I've seen many "bug artists" produce version of this quote and graphic so if anyone has something like this they could post a link. I don't know who came up with it first.

@futurebird @eigen And where might one purchase a similar garment? Asking for a friend. (It's me. I'm the friend.)
